After obtaining a Master of Science in physics from the Ohio State University in 1964, Mr. Vanderwerf embarked on a successful career of over 50 years in optical engineering. He enjoyed early success with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the John H. Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio in the effort to put a man on the moon in July 1969, for which he was presented with the aforementioned agency's Apollo Achievement Award.
Mr. Vanderwerf was employed for many years in optical product development at the multinational corporation 3M. In 1990, he received the company's Corporate Circle of Technical Excellence Award. He also received several 3M Golden Step awards for successful product launches. Mr. Vanderwerf is noted as the sole or co-inventor on nearly 30 U.S. patents in the fields of optics and light applications.
Moreover, Mr. Vanderwerf earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota in the 1970s. He was also formerly affiliated with the Optical Society of America. Mr. Vanderwerf currently excels as a volunteer and a leader for religious classes with his local church.
In 2010, Mr. Vanderwerf began a successful career as an author, after publishing widely in optics journals, conference proceedings and trade magazines. His first book, "Applied Prismatic and Reflective Optics," was a study of the practical applications of prismatic optical components. His second book, published in 2017, was "The Story of Light Science: From Early Theories to Today's Extraordinary Applications," which examined the evolution of man's understanding and usage of light from classical antiquity to the present. At the age of 83, Mr. Vanderwerf continues to follow the latest developments in optics and photonics, and occasionally consults through Vantex Optical Consulting.
