Dr. Wolanski is a coastal oceanographer, ecohydrologist and educator who, for the past five decades, has been heavily involved in research involving hydrology, estuarine, coastal and reef oceanography, as well as modeling. Specifically, he has focused his work on associating physics and biology in estuarine, coastal, reef and savannah ecosystems. Dr. Wolanski was notably responsible for developing the first understanding of reef water circulation.
Born in Africa, Dr. Wolanski traveled to Sydney, Australia, where he began his work as a hydrologist and engineer for the New South Wales Pollution Control Commission in 1974 and the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation in Comma, Australia, from 1976 to 1978. He subsequently acquired a tenured position as a lead research scientist for the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the country's tropical marine research agency in Townsville, between 1978 and 2007. Likewise, Dr. Wolanski earned distinction as an associate for several years thereafter.
Outside of his extensive fieldwork, Dr. Wolanski was an adjunct professor and senior water quality scientist at James Cook University in Townsville. He began teaching in 2007 in the college of science and engineering at the Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research, from which he retired in 2020. Dr. Wolanski has also continued to host an annual workshop in East Africa, Tanzania, in conjunction with the Tanzania National Park Authority, since 1994.
Engaged with various organizations, Dr. Wolanski has been a member of the science and policy committee of Japan's International Center of Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas. He has also been active with the European Union DANUBIUS-PP scientific and technical advisory board. Well regarded for his scholarly rigor, Dr. Wolanski is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Académie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer and the Institution of Engineers. He is also a member of the Australian Research Council, where he has been active with the organization's college of experts.
Dr. Wolanski's research has been extensively published in more than 400 professional articles. He has also written over a dozen books, including "Ecohydrology from Catchment to Coast," which is a new series. Other works to Dr. Wolanski's credit include "Oceanographic Processes of Coral Reefs: Physical and Biological Links in the Great Barrier Reef" in 2001, "Estuarine Ecohydrology" in 2007, "Coastal Wetlands: An Integrated Ecosystem Approach" in 2009, "Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science" in 2012 and "Coasts and Estuaries: The Future" in 2019.
Having developed an interest in wildlife due to his upbringing, Mr. Wolanski received a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium in 1969, after which he traveled to the U.S., where he acquired a Master of Science in chemical engineering and geological engineering at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1970. While at Princeton, he met a professor who worked in hydrology, who was instrumental in his future success. Continuing his studies, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1972 and a postdoctoral fellowship at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena between 1972 and 1973. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Wolanski is a registered professional engineer in Belgium and Australia.
The recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his exemplary contributions to the field, Dr. Wolanski notably earned a Queensland IT&T Award for Excellence, an Australian Centenary Medal and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association. He also obtained an International Foundation grant from IBM. Additionally, Dr. Wolanski was the recipient of an Honorary Doctor from the Catholic University of Louvain in 2004 and the University of Hull in Hull, England, in 2017.
