Dr. Ohta began his career at Misawa Homes Institute of Research and Development Co. Ltd. as a researcher in 1995. When he initially worked for the company, homes in Japan were not considered to be energy efficient. As an environmental engineer, Dr. Ohta made it his goal to develop sustainable, energy efficient housing that could be reduced further to zero energy homes.
For over 25 years, Dr. Ohta has maintained his involvement with Misawa Homes Co. Ltd. He has been active with the aforementioned company as an engineer since 1995 and the general manager since 2008. He has also served as the director of the company since 2018. To his credit, 50 percent of Misawa Homes Co. Ltd.'s houses are acknowledged as zero energy as of 2021.
Prior to his contributions to Misawa Homes Co. Ltd., Dr. Ohta obtained a Master of Mechanical Engineering from Aoyama Gakuin University in 1992. While completing his graduate coursework, he accepted a grant from Aoyama Gakuin University in 1990. Dr. Ohta eventually earned a Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Human Environmental System at Hokkaido University in 2008.
Dr. Ohta is a regular contributor to articles published in professional journals of associations such as The Society of Heating, Air-Conditioning and Sanitary Engineers of Japan, Architectural Institute of Japan, Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has received the Best Paper Award from Japan Solar Energy Society in 2008. He also received the Good Design Award from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion in 2007, 2013 and 2019. He further flourished as a member of the Japan Solar Energy Society, for which he had served as a director since 2010. Additionally, he has been appointed as the director of the Japan Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Testing Laboratory.
He has contributed to various international projects as a member of national teams arranged for IEA EBC, International Energy Agency Energy in Buildings and Communities, such as Annex40: Building Commissioning to Improve Energy Performance, Annex57: Evaluation of Embodied Energy & CO2 Emissions for Building Construction and Annex62: Ventilative Cooling.
In his free time, Dr. Ohta enjoys bird watching, cooking, and raising tropical fish which are in some sense, environmentally friendly or at least a cue to think about the global climate issues.
