Now retired from Park Nicollet Health Services, an integrated health care system in Minnesota, Dr. Hanson served as the President and CEO of the Park Nicollet Institute for Research and Education from 1986 until 2002. He previously served Park Nicollet organizations as a medical director, Vice President of legislation and community affairs, and director of medical education. He practiced pulmonary and critical medicine at Park Nicollet Health Services from 1971 until 2012. Park Nicollet through its foundation funds programs to better support the community via various partnerships and philanthropic efforts. Dr. Hanson has served in many leadership roles at Park Nicollet and has served on all of its boards at one time or another.
Apart from his full-time career as a medical practitioner and Park Nicollet leader, he has been actively involved in professional organizations and public policy. He has served as president and board chair of Smoke-Free Generation Minnesota from 1984 to 1990 and as founding president and board chair of the Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition in 1985 and served in those positions intermittently until 2007. He served as vice chair of the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco (MPAA1) from 1998 to 2003 - MPAAT received over $200 million from the Minnesota Tobacco Suit Settlement. Dr. Hanson spent a decade on the board of directors for the Minnesota Health Data Institute from 1993 to 2003. He has served as president of the Behavior at Work Collaborative, a non profit dedicated to improving workplace culture, from 2010 to present.
Prior to embarking upon his medical journey Dr. Hanson pursued a Bachelors of Arts degree at Dartmouth College graduating in 1959. He earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in 1963. He completed a rotating internship at Hennepin County Medical Center and a residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota. He completed a fellowship in pulmonary disease at the University of Minnesota in 1971 after serving three years in Japan and Vietnam in the U.S. Navy between 1965 and 1968. Eminently qualified in his field, he is board certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pulmonary Disease.
Dr. Hanson feels fortunate to to have been aligned with several prominent professional organizations throughout his career. An elected fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians, he also is past president of the Hennepin County Medical Society and the Minnesota Medical Association. He was a delegate representing Minnesota at the American Medical Association House of Delegates for eighteen years.
Twice recognized by the Hennepin County medical society, he received the 1998 Charles Bolles Bolles-Rogers Award and the 2007 Shotwell Award. Other recognitions include the Physician of Excellence Award from Park Nicollet Health Services in 2000, Stop the Violence Award in 1994 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1998 from the Minnesota Medical Association, and the Diehl Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota Medical School Alumni Association in 2008.
In 2020, Dr. Hanson published his first book, titled "Do No Harm: A Personal Memoir." He is in the process of publishing a memoir about his war experiences and a senior's guide for living well and dying well.
