Driven to pursue a career in academia, Dr. Musch earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Calvin College in 1976, a Master of Public Health in epidemiology from the University of Michigan's School of Public Health in 1978, and a PhD in epidemiologic science from the University of Michigan in 1981. Backed by his considerable expertise, he currently excels as a Professor in two departments at the University of Michigan, his primary appointment being in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences within the Medical School, and his joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology within the School of Public Health. He also is a faculty member with the Institute for Health Policy and Innovation and a faculty associate with Global REACH.
Throughout his career, Dr. Musch has applied his expertise in epidemiology to clinical research on the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of major eye diseases. In a career that has been filled with highlights, he is incredibly proud of benefitting from the studies that he has led or participated in as well as working with young residents, fellows, and faculty who will eventually become leaders in the field. Additionally, Dr. Musch has garnered a plethora of awards for his work, including the Lew R. Wasserman Merit Award from Research to Prevent Blindness and most recently, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a Gold Fellow of the Association for Research in Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Musch has been affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College of Epidemiology, the Society for Clinical Trials, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the Cochrane Collaboration Eyes and Vision Group. In conjunction with his primary responsibilities, he serves on numerous monitoring boards for ongoing clinical trials, such as the National Eye Institute's Intramural Branch Data and Safety Monitoring Committee, and the editorial boards of three journals.
