After nearly 40 successful years in education, Ms. Draper retired in 2014 as the band director at J.C. Harmon High School in Kansas City. She formerly served in the same capacity at three other area schools within the Kansas City School District and worked as a vocal music teacher and band director at three schools in DeSoto, Kansas. When she was not teaching students, Ms. Draper excelled as an instrument repair technician for more than 20 years.
Among her many personal and professional achievements throughout her career, Ms. Draper was especially humbled when her junior high school band was selected as the first ever band to play in the Kansas University Band Day Parade. She reflects on her many years of teaching with much fondness and admiration. Outside of her primary commitments, Ms. Draper enjoys performing as a member of the Kansas City Gospel Big Band.
Ms. Draper has also flourished on the band commission and as the assistant band director of the Bonner Springs City Band. Since 2010, she has been a member of the Yakety Sax Saxophone Quartet. Ms. Draper is also active as a parishioner of the College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe, KS.
Born in Texas, Ms. Draper was inspired to study music by her father, who played the guitar. The two would often sing together and they both enjoyed music. When she reached middle school, she played the clarinet in the school band. By the time she had graduated from high school, Ms. Draper could skillfully play a number of different instruments.
Accepted to MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas, Ms. Draper obtained a Bachelor of Arts in music education in 1975. Years later, she returned to college and graduated with a Master of Arts in school leadership from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, in 2007. To support her career, she is an associate member of the Music Educators National Conference, the National Band Association and the Women Band Directors International. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Draper has been featured in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America, the seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education, and the 25th edition of Who's Who of American Women.
