Concluding his career in academia in 2019 after a 50-year tenure in Princeton, Dr. Charlesworth earned distinction as a respected faculty member and the George L. Collord Professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Princeton Theological Seminary. Though he no longer teaches, he continues to serve as the editor and director of the Princeton Dead Sea Scroll Project and as the director of the Syrus Sinaiticus Project in Santa Catherina, Sinai. As an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, Dr. Charlesworth also advises the World Missionary Council and preaches and lectures globally. He was elected to Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab [The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters] in 2000. He is a Fellow of Wolfson College and Fellow of Yarnton Manor, Oxford University.
Dr. Charlesworth's distinguished career included a former position at Duke University as an assistant and associate professor of religion, and director of the Center for the Study of Christian Origins, between 1969 and 1984. He also had the pleasure of teaching at several international institutions, including as a Lady Davis Professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Most Distinguished Professor of the Bible at Naples University, Annual Professor in the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem, and McCarthy Professor at the Pontificia Università Gregoriana in Rome. As a part of his commitment to his field, Dr. Charlesworth has been active on a multitude of professional organizations, including the Society of Biblical Literature, the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, the American Schools of Oriental Research, and the American Academy of Religion.
Well regarded for his scholarly rigor, Dr. Charlesworth has been involved in widespread research. His studies have been based on the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old and New Testaments, as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Gospel of John, the Apocalypse of John, and other pertinent areas of the field. He has notably collaborated with numerous institutions and organizations on 2,000-year-old scrolls, has made extensive efforts to make accurate texts and translations more available, and has excavated in such locations as Bethsaida and Nazareth. Dr. Charlesworth has received grants for his work from such organizations as the Humboldt Foundation, the National Geographic Society, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Duke University Research Council, and numerous research grants from Princeton Seminary.
An award-winning writer and editor since the late 1960s, Dr. Charlesworth has written over 400 scholarly articles and reviews and over 80 books. He also published a definitive edition of the Pseudepigrapha and remains active on the editorial board of the professional publication of the Biblical Archaeology Society. Among awards celebrating his books, he has received honors from the Biblical Archaeology Society Publication Awards for the Best Academic Biblical Books for 1993, 1994, and 1995, and the Best Book on the Old Testament in 1984. His 2010 book notably received a Best Book on the Bible Award by Christian Century. Besides his writing contributions, Dr. Charlesworth has been featured on major television networks such as the History Channel, Discovery Channel, CBS, FoxNews, CVTC, and BBC.
Active on many committees throughout his scholarly career, Dr. Charlesworth has found success as the Fulbright committee chairperson of the Princeton Theological Seminary since 1985, leading that seminary to receive the recognition of "Outstanding Fulbright Producing Institution" for over a decade. He is also a founding member of the Biennial Enoch Symposia since 2001 and the founder and co-convener of the Princeton-Prague Symposium on the Historical Jesus since 2006. Moreover, among other professional activities to his credit, Dr. Charlesworth has been the president of the Foundation on Judaism and Christian Origins since 1978.
Dr. Charlesworth earned a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1962, a Bachelor of Divinity from Duke Divinity School in 1965, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Duke University in 1967. Under R. de Vaux and P. Benoit, he also earned the Eleve Titulaire de 1'École biblique avec la mention "Très Honorable" in 1969.
He was ordained to the ministry through the United Methodist Church in 1963. After graduating from Duke, Dr. Charlesworth traveled abroad on a Fulbright Fellowship to Edinburgh, where he completed his first two books, and played basketball, earning All East, All Scotland, and All Great Britain. He also received a grant to work in Israel before being offered a professorship at Duke University.
He taught trumpet for eight years and was trumpet soloist in the Ohio Wesleyan Symphony Orchestra and later first trumpet in Duke's Symphony Orchestra.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Charlesworth has received multiple awards, including recognition among the Top Most Outstanding Professors by Duke University in 1983, the Frank Moore Cross Award from the American Schools of Oriental Research in 1997, a Certification of Appreciation from the Philippine Christian University in 2009 and, more recently, a Thomas Nelson Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Honorary Bronze of Pauls' Visit to Cyprus in 2017. He also received honorary Doctors of Humane Letters from Rocky Mountain College in 2006 and Philippine Christian University in 2009. Named to several professional publications as well, including the British National Bibliography and the Two Thousand Notable Americans and Who's Who in Biblical Studies and Archaeology, Dr. Charlesworth is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been cited in various editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Religion.
