A distinguished communications professional of nearly 40 years whose background has included working in radio, doing voice overs for commercials and training videos, and writing newspaper columns, Dr. Richter has enjoyed a full career in the field. Bringing extensive experience with him into the classroom, he is also a tenured professor who began as an instructor at Triton Community College in Franklin Park, Illinois, in 1989. Today, he is a professor of communications at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina, a position he acquired in 1992. While on campus, he also spent 14 years as department chairman between 1998 and 2012. He currently teaches Video Production, Directing, Media Law, Introduction to Mass Communication, Public Speaking, and a course that he developed titled Sitcoms and Society, which discusses how sitcoms both reflect American society from the 1950s to present day and have been used to change society's ideals.
Dr. Richter also established his own successful business, Richter Communications, in 1983 as a communications consultant, which he still maintains today. Passionate about promoting innovative thinking, some of his expertise includes program design and course creation, staff recruitment and training, media production and communications, and career coaching. Among some of his other notable roles, Dr. Richter was media director for the Saudi Customs Training program in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was also a co-founder of Northern Lights Production and worked as a radio disc jockey / program director early on in his career doing morning drive in Mississippi.
Dr. Richter authored the book, "Radio: A Complete Guide to the Industry." He also contributed to "The Encyclopedia of Television" and the "International Encyclopedia of Mass Communications." Contributing his knowledge and expertise to the community, Dr. Richter often participates with various non-profit organizations, including the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago and the Footcandle Film Festival, by volunteering his time writing, directing and offering his video production expertise. He was also committed to such organizations as the Council on Adolescents of Catawba County, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, and, among others, the March of Dimes. He is presently chairman of the advisory board, writer and editor for GFBConnect.com.
Dr. Richter received a Bachelor of Arts in mass communications at Columbia College in 1984. He then earned a Master of Arts in mass communications at Arkansas State University in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy in communications at the University of Tennessee in 1996. In addition to his honor society memberships with Kappa Tau Alpha and Alpha Epsilon Rho, Dr. Richter is active with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications and the Broadcast Education Association. These professional organizations have been instrumental in his career.
Honored by the University of Tennessee, Dr. Richter received the Outstanding Graduate Research Award in 1991. He also received a Thrivent Fellowship, was awarded a National Association of Television Programming Executives fellowship as well as numerous other recognitions, including being named Raymond Bost Distinguished Professor by Lenoir-Rhyne, recognition for his Community Service and the Student Government Association Award. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Richter has been cited in the third edition of Who's Who in Entertainment and the first edition of Who's Who in Media and Communication.
