With decades of educational experience to his credit, Mr. Hedgemon consistently harbored an affinity for choral compositions during his childhood. With each passing year of his primary and secondary edification, he garnered inspiration from the compassion his educators exhibited for their work and students. Desiring to preserve the legacies of his mentors, he resolved to combine his passion for music with his past learning experiences and pursue a career in education.
Prior to his success, Mr. Hedgemon initially enrolled at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and earned a certification in elementary education. By 1995, he had attained a Bachelor of Business Administration in business administration and management from Stillman College. Subsequently, he continued graduate studies at the University of West Alabama and earned a certification in teaching vocal and choral music for kindergarten through 12th grade. For 42 years, Mr. Hedgemon excelled as a language arts and Humanities teacher for the Tuscaloosa City Schools in Alabama for Westlawn Middle School. First, as a language arts and Humanities instructor. In this capacity, he taught countless students in the subjects of reading, language, literature, character awareness, literacy, and study and test taking skills. He later began a stellar career as music and performing arts instructor at Westlawn and University Place Middle Schools with the Tuscaloosa City Schools. He taught music history, the functionality of musical instruments and, most notably, the art of melodic vocalization. Throughout his career, he has directed award winning choirs. Owing to his efforts, Mr. Hedgemon's students performed at the second inauguration of former President Barack Obama, as well as for the prime minister of the Bahamas, two instances among many of which he considers his most notable achievements. Currently, he serves as the minister of music for Weeping Mary Baptist Church and retains a lauded reputation for his contributions to the Christian community.
Mr. Hedgemon has been distinguished with the Martin Luther King Jr. Education Award from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the 2014 Alabama Teacher of the Year Award and an induction into the Jacksonville Teacher Hall of Fame. Likewise, he maintains civic responsibilities as a counselor for the Alabama Baptist Crusaders. Mr. Hedgemon has since entered into a well-deserved retirement and plans to continue enjoying time with his family as he prepares to publish his personal memoirs in the very near future.
