Douglas Laycock Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Law

Mr. Laycock channels years of expertise in law to his work with the University of Virginia



    CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, May 21, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Douglas Laycock has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Chicago, Mr. Laycock began his career as an assistant professor with his graduate alma mater. Four years later, he accepted the role of professor at the University of Chicago before moving to the University of Texas' School of Law, where he became Alice McKean Young regents chair in law and remained to 2006. Mr. Laycock served as the Yale Kamisar collegiate professor of law with the University of Michigan from 2006 to 2010.

Mr. Laycock now serves as Alice McKean Young regents chair in law emeritus for the University of Texas at Austin and as Robert E. Scott distinguished professor of law at the University of Virginia. He has been also affiliated with such organizations as the American Law Institute, with which he served on the Council (the board of directors) and as a Reporter, the American Academy of Arts and Science, the American Association of University Professors, and the Chicago Council of Lawyers. He served as lead counsel in six religious liberty cases before the Supreme Court of the United States. His many writings on religious liberty have been collected in five volumes totaling nearly 5000 pages. He has also published major works in his other field, remedies for legal wrongs.

Throughout his career, Mr. Laycock has received several awards for his outstanding body of work. In addition to winning the Scribes Book Award from the American Bar Association, the Civil Libertarian of the Year Award from the ACLU of Texas in 1995 and 2000, and the Civitatis Award for Distinguished Lifetime Service from the University of Texas, he was presented with a National First Freedom Award from the Center for America's First Freedom and the International Religious Liberty Award from the J. Reuben Clark Law Society. More recently, he was recognized with the Roger and Madeleine Traynor Faculty Achievement Award from the University of Virginia and the Bill of Rights and Religious Liberty Award from Utah Valley University. Looking toward the future, Mr. Laycock intends to continue teaching at the University of Virginia.
