Now retired from a successful career in corporate law, Mr. Schmutz was a founding principal of Turtle Creek Group LLC for 10 years, until 2012. He is the former senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of La Quinta Inns Inc. and Meditrust Inc. During the course of his legal career, Mr. Schumtz also held various leading roles with several other large, public organizations, including Sbarro Inc. and Hardee's Food Systems Inc.
Presently, Mr. Schmutz focuses his free time on his second passion, which is centered on researching and writing about the Civil War. His first book, which was published in 2009, is titled "The Battle of the Crater: A Complete History." "The Bloody Fifth, Volume 1: Secession to the Suffolk Campaign (The 5th Texas Infantry Regiment, Hood's Texas Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia)" later followed in 2016 and "The Bloody Fifth, Volume 2: Gettysburg to Appomattox (The 5th Texas Infantry Regiment, Hood's Texas Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia)" in 2017. When he is not studying history, Mr. Schmutz enjoys conducting genealogical research.
A leader in his community, Mr. Schmutz is a former board director of the Blessed Sacrament Academy Foundation. He has also been a member of the Advisory Council of the Assistance League in San Antonio since 2007, has sat on the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America and has been the chairperson of the Assistance League's Advisory Council since 2013. Likewise, Mr. Schmutz is an Eagle Scout and a U.S. Army veteran who served to the rank of a captain between 1972 and 1976.
Mr. Schmutz prepared for his career by attaining a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, at Canisius College in 1969 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence, cum laude, at Notre Dame University in 1972.While pursuing his law degree, he notably served as the executive editor of the Notre Dame Law Review between 1971 and 1972. Mr. Schmutz also received a Master of Laws at George Washington University in 1975. He has been admitted to practice law by the Texas, Indiana, and D.C. Bar Associations, the Supreme Court of United States, the Federal Bar Association, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
Affiliated with several pertinent organizations in support of his career, Mr. Schmutz is a member and director of the hospitality committee, as well as the community recreation and common interest development committee of the American Bar Association. He is also on the board of directors of the American Corporate Counsel Association and is active with several other professional societies, including the American Hotel and Motel Association, the National Restaurant Association and the San Antonio Bar Association. He is a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. Well regarded for his indelible contributions to the field, Mr. Schmutz has been recognized with several accolades, including a Buffalo Evening News Leadership Award, an A. B. Weber Award and an Assistance League Achievement Award. He was also the recipient of a Best Book Award for Military History by the Texas Authors Association in both 2017 and 2018.
