Dr. Jobe is a prominent pediatrician and educator who recently earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of pediatrics at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, University of Cincinnati, in 2020. He had previously found success for over two decades in the divisions of neonatology and pulmonary biology. Dr. Jobe formerly taught pediatrics, served as the director of the neonatal intensive care unit and the pulmonary research laboratory, and was named as the Joseph W. Saint Geme junior professor of pediatrics at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in the David Geffen School of Medicine between 1977 and 1997. Additionally, he made significant contributions as the director of the perinatal research laboratories at the Walter P. Martin Research Center at Harbor-UCLA from 1991 until 1997.
Much of Dr. Jobe's scholarly efforts centered on his research in surfactant homeostasis, lung injury and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, as well as fetal inflammation and lung development. He conducted numerous studies throughout his career, directed a Program Project Grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, collaborated with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council for more than 25 years funding translation research, and participated in two clinical studies in his area of expertise. Dr. Jobe also served on several committees, including the steering committee of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's neonatal research network for a decade between 1996 and 2006, and was a member of the NIH's national advisory child health and human development council from 2003 to 2007.
Dr. Jobe has contributed his expertise by authoring over 400 peer-reviewed articles, over 220 editorials, and numerous books chapters. He notably served as an editor of Pediatric Research from 1984 until 1988 and as an editor for the Journal of Pediatrics between 1997 and 2016. Supporting his career through various memberships, Dr. Jobe is presently active with the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Institute of Medicine and the American Society for Clinical Investigation, among others. He is also a former chairperson of the pediatric assembly of the American Thoracic Society, a former secretary/treasury of the American Pediatric Society and a past president of the Society for Pediatric Research.
Some of Dr. Jobe's career highlights included directing a clinic in Baja, California, for the Flying Samaritans organization once per month as a medical student. It was his first venture in international medicine, and served as an invaluable learning experience. In addition to receiving grant funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to conduct a controlled trial in Africa, Pakistan and India to test a low dose hypothesis, he also served as a consultant on the trial. A joint effort with the World Health Organization, the study focused on what was found to be a potentially dangerous drug. Furthermore, Dr. Jobe had the opportunity to serve as a grants reviewer for the Basil O' Conner Awards with the March of Dimes.
Dr. Jobe studied at Stanford University, acquiring a bachelor's degree in biology and graduating in 1967. To avoid being drafted to fight in Vietnam, he enrolled in medical school, earning both a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of California San Diego in 1973. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include a residency in pediatrics and fellowship in neonatology on the California campus in 1975 and 1977, respectively. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Jobe is board certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine.
Selected for a multitude of awards and recognitions, Dr. Jobe recently received the Mary Ellen Avery Neonatal Research Award from the Society for Pediatric Research and American Pediatric Society in 2017. He also earned a Founders Award from the Midwestern Society for Pediatric Research in 2012, a Virginia Apgar Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2011, and was named as a Legend for service to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center by the LA BioMed in 2011. Likewise, during the earliest stages of his career, Dr. Jobe was recognized with the Richard E. Weitzman Award by the Harbor-UCLA Faculty Society in 1982.
