As professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Dr. Solberg earned distinction as a teacher and materials scientist who retired from his post in 2014 after more than 30 years on campus. During periods of his career, he was head of his department and leader of a multi-faculty study programme within materials technology. Specializing in physical and steel metallurgy, hydrogen storage metals, metallography and, among other areas of the field, transmission electron microscopy, he originally hailed from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH, Trondheim), where he spent nearly a decade in teaching and research, as well as the University of Oslo, where he worked for one year. He also excelled in the field as a research scientist at Central Institute for Industrial Research in Oslo, from 1977 to 1982, and as a research consultant for SINTEF in Trondheim for much of his career between 1984 and 2015. In addition to his engagement in the education of MSc and PhD university students, Prof. Solberg gave, during most of his active career, yearly courses within physical metallurgy and metallography/optical microscopy for national industry.
Dr. Solberg's extensive research during his tenure in academia included such topics as precipitation of copper in silicon; controlled processing and welding of microalloyed steels; forge and diffusion welding of steel; impact properties of protective steel plates; stainless steels; austenitic manganese steel; tool steel; ferroalloys; cast iron; paste boronizing and pulse plasma nitriding; recrystallization and precipitation in aluminum alloys; semi-solid magnesium alloys; creep, stress relaxation, and superplasticity; and rapid solidification and hydrogen storage properties of hydride forming alloys. He has disseminated his findings by contributing to dozens of scholarly articles in various peer reviewed scientific journals, both nationally and internationally. Supporting his career in the sciences, Dr. Solberg was a member of the Norwegian Metallurgical Society and the Scandinavian Society of Electron Microscopy for many years. He also remains active as a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
Dr. Solberg studied at the University of Oslo, from which he received an undergraduate degree in 1970, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976. He notably served as a sergeant, second lieutenant and lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the Norwegian Army from 1968 till 2001. In 1992, Dr. Solberg was recognized with an Award for Excellence in Educational Activities from SINTEF, a research organization headquartered in Trondheim that oversees various research and development projects.
