Mr. Stepp retired from public education in 2017 after a tenure of more than 10 years at Royal Spring Middle School and two additional years at the district's Scott County High School in Georgetown, Kentucky. As a band director, he guided students during classroom hours and was responsible for the successful oversight of countless concerts. Prior to joining the Georgetown district, Mr. Stepp served as a band director for schools throughout Glasgow, Frankfort, and Hodgenville. Before transitioning into education, he also briefly worked in the field as a sound engineer for Mobile Sound Corporation in Versailles, Kentucky.
As an extension of his work in the classroom, Mr. Stepp joined the 202nd Army Band, Kentucky Army National Guard, in 1997. In this capacity, he spent more than two decades as the chief warrant officer five, commander, bandmaster and conductor. Furthermore, in 2016, Mr. Stepp was named as the chief of the Army National Guard Bands.
Among his most memorable experiences, Mr. Stepp had the opportunity to perform at the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference. Additionally, his professional endeavors have included membership with several industry-related organizations, including the National Band Association, the Music Educators National Conference and the Kentucky Music Educators Association. Well regarded in his field, Mr. Stepp is notably an expert in playing the saxophone.
Mr. Stepp is most proud to have developed a keen ability to teach music to younger individuals. For this reason, he decided to become both a musician and educator. Attending school locally, Mr. Stepp earned a Bachelor of Arts in music education in 1983 and a Master of Arts in secondary education in 1991 at the University of Kentucky. He was a nationally board certified teacher from 2003 to 2015.
In 1991, Mr. Stepp received an Outstanding Young Band Director Award in Kentucky from Phi Beta Mu. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been cited in the third, seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education.
