Lynn Carol Wiley-Bennett Honored for Excellence in Education

Renowned for her contributions to education, Ms. Wiley-Bennett received the Professional Courage Award from the West Virginia Education Association in 1990

BRIDGEPORT, WV, May 28, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lynn Carol Wiley-Bennett has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

For more than 50 years, Lynn Carol Wiley-Bennett has excelled as an educator in a career spanning numerous roles, titles, and institutions. Although she retired from public education in 2003, she has continued to this day to work and advocate in the name of her field, striving to always support the rights and cause of teachers everywhere. If Ms. Wiley-Bennett believes in something, she has noted, she will "fight hard for it"—and she has been fighting hard for her area of expertise from a very young age.

Growing up in Morgantown, West Virginia, Ms. Wiley-Bennett was raised in a family that valued the importance of education. In fact, she used to "play teacher" as a child and had an early passion for helping others learn. Even then, she knew that teaching meant more than spouting facts and remembering numbers; her keyword as a teacher has always been "Think," which is what she later encouraged her students to do in the classroom. Upon graduating from high school, she attended Shepherd College, now known as Shepherd University, where she earned a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education in 1969.

Equipped with a degree, Ms. Wiley-Bennett launched her career as a classroom teacher at an elementary school in 1970, a role she held until 1991; she also simultaneously advanced to principal of the school from 1984 to 1991. She subsequently served as the director and program developer at the North Central Regional Education Service Agency in Clarksburg, West Virginia, from 1990 to 2003, and has found much success as an educational consultant at her own company—Bennett Educational Consulting—based in the city of Bridgeport since 2003. Through her consulting services, she has assisted several nonprofit organizations and secured millions of dollars over the years; the funds have been partly utilized to bring in speakers, historians, and authors, as well as promoting educational trips.

In addition to her primary endeavors, Ms. Wiley-Bennett has been active as the Interim Executive Director of Mission West Virginia, a nonprofit that serves to "promote positive futures" for youth and families by "recruiting foster families, providing life skills education, and creating community connections." She has also accrued experience as a grant writer for several schools, school districts, and nonprofit project evaluations—including four American history grants within the program "HEART," which encompassed history education, arts, research, and technology. For more than 10 years, she worked with up to 100 teachers for this project. As a testament to her excellent reputation, she was hired by the West Virginia State Treasurer's Office to develop a curriculum in coordination with the State Department of Education to teach students about financial literacy—which she considers one of the highlights of her entire career. One of the lesson plans within this program was titled "Get a Life," which was a simulation to teach students how to live within a budget.

Ms. Wiley-Bennett has, over the course of her robust career, received several accolades, including a Professional Courage Award from the West Virginia Education Association in 1990. She has also received a Regional Electronic Alternative Learning grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1996, and has been the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities grant from the West Virginia Department of Education since 2001 and the Teaching American History grant from the U.S. Department of Education since 2003. She has been a longtime member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, serves on the board of directors for WV KIDS Count, and was appointed as President of the National Association of Regional Media Centers from 1997 to 1998.
