WORCESTER, MA, May 31, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Sharon Perlman Krefetz, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Krefetz has been recognized for her many years of outstanding teaching, research, and leadership. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Krefetz has had a long and distinguished career as an educator at Clark University. Her service to Clark began in 1972 when she was appointed an assistant professor of Political Science. She was awarded tenure and promoted to the rank of associate professor in 1978. In 1992 she was appointed dean of Clark's undergraduate college and served in that position until 2000. She also served as associate provost of the University from 1994 to 2000, when she returned to her full-time teaching position. Dr. Krefetz co-founded Clark's Women's and Gender Studies Program in 1979, its Urban Development and Social Change Program in 2001, and its Anton and Steinbrecher Fellowship Program in 2002. In recognition of her outstanding teaching, research and leadership at Clark, Dr. Krefetz was awarded the Andrea B. and Peter D. Klein '64 Distinguished Professorship in 2010. She became a professor emerita in 2015.
Dr. Krefetz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with High Honors in Political Science from Douglass College (now called the Douglass Residential College), the Women's branch of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in 1967. Several of her Douglass professors encouraged her go on to graduate school and earn a Ph.D. at a time when very few women were pursuing doctoral degrees in Political Science. She initially could not imagine herself studying in a doctoral program, but she was eventually persuaded by those professors (two female and two male) to apply to Ph.D. programs. Accepted by programs at several universities, she chose to do her graduate work in the Politics department at Brandeis University. Supported by a Brandeis fellowship from 1967 to 1969 and by a fellowship from the Gordon Foundation from 1969 to 1971, Dr. Krefetz earned a Master of Arts degree in 1970 and a PhD in Politics from Brandeis in 1975.
Dr. Krefetz is an expert on policies aimed at increasing the supply of affordable housing for low and moderate-income households in cities and suburbs. Her publications on this topic include Welfare Policy Making and City Politics and "Public Housing Matters: Public Housing in Sweden, The United States, and Israel." While serving as a Fellow at Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies in 2000-2001 she co-edited "The State of the Nation's Housing 2001." Dr. Krefetz has also served as a consultant to the Connecticut Blue Ribbon Commission on Affordable Housing and the American Planning Association's Report on Regional Approaches to Affordable Housing, and has been a member of the Worcester City Manager's Task Force and Coordinating Council for Sustaining Housing First Solutions.
Dr. Krefetz has also earned praise and rewards for her teaching. In 1990, she received the Outstanding Teaching Award from Clark University, and in 1992 she was named one of the Top 125 College and University Teachers by the American Association for Higher Education. Her retirement from Clark was celebrated at an event that featured tributes by many former students, state and local public officials, and scholars. Dr. Krefetz enjoys keeping in touch with many of her former students and is proud to hear of their achievements.
