Among those clients are developers, investors, attorneys, nonprofit organizations and more.
Having led a long and successful career since 1975, Dr. Brown initially worked as a management consultant in New York and Philadelphia before becoming office manager and a designer for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago and a project architect for Douglas Schroeder Associates in Chicago. Accepting his first teaching position in the school of architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago shortly thereafter, he taught at Arizona State University in Tempe before being named as Associate Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Colorado in Denver in 1987. He started his firm in 1989. Blending his expertise with his civic duties during the following years, Dr. Brown served as the treasurer, secretary and a board director for the City Club of Denver, program chairperson and board director for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Forum of Colorado and trustee for the Denver Foundation of Architecture between 1998 and 2000. He served as the Cass Gilbert Visiting Lecturer at the University of Minnesota in 1998.
As a recognized expert in his field, Dr. Brown has been instrumental in developing network methods to analyze functional and economic effects of built spatial-visual patterns in retail, workplace, health care and public space. He has written about his work in various professional, critical and scientific journals. Dr. Brown was also a columnist for Architecture, Real Estate and Urban Design and for the Denver Business Journal between 1993 and 2003.
Selected for the Practitioner Research Award from the American Real Estate Society in 2017, Dr. Brown also received two Best Paper Awards from the Society in 1998 and 2006. Other honors include being named as an Architectural Record and American Institute of Architects Walter Wagner Forum Finalist in 1989. His book, Access, Property and American Urban Space, was published by Routledge/Taylor & Francis in 2016.
In 2006 he became Head of the Real Estate Management and Development group at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, and the ALDAR Dean of Business at the Higher College of Technology in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in 2010. Dr. Brown was a member of the American Real Estate Society, was an Academic Fellow of the Urban Land Institute and is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Since returning to the U.S., he has focused his expert witness work on disputes about First Amendment public forum, premises liability, problem property and architectural copyright infringement.
Dr. Brown holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications from the University of Illinois, a Master of Business Administration in Management from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, a Master of Science in Architecture from University College London, Bartlett School, and a Doctor of Technology in Built Environments from Ulster University. Shortly before acquiring his bachelor's degree, he received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force in 1967.
