Although Dr. Mowery still maintains a private music teaching studio, he retired in 2002 after more than 40 years of teaching in private, and public schools, and colleges. His lengthy career as an educator included teaching at several public schools in Ohio as well as at Wilkes College in Pennsylvania and Bluffton University in Ohio. Crediting his success as a teacher to his ability to prioritize his students' interests, Dr. Mowery has also found significance in connecting with his students on a personal level, which improves their success.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Mowery has excelled as a professional musician, and a church musician for decades. As a professional musician, he served for over 20 years as Principal Bassist with the Lima (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra, plus performing with other orchestras, including the Columbus Symphony, The Memphis Symphony, and the Scranton Symphony Orchestras. As a church musician, Dr. Mowery has directed church choirs and performed as a church musician in Ohio and Illinois. Participating in over 1,600 concerts between 1974 and 1985, with The Mowerys, A Family Touring Music Ministry, he has performed with a number church orchestras, including Southeast Christian Church, Lyndon Christian Church and Maple Grove Baptist Church in Louisville. An expert in playing and teaching brass and string, instruments, he has further flourished with various jazz groups in Hawaii, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. During his tenure, Dr. Mowery has been active as a composer, a music arranger, and a music adjudicator throughout Ohio and Kentucky with OMEA and KMEA.
After serving in the U.S. Navy in Hawaii between 1955 and 1958, Dr. Mowery earned an undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University in 1962. He continued his studies at the University of Illinois, from which he obtained a Master of Music in Performance, and a Master of Music Education degrees in 1968. Returning to The Ohio State University, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1993. Certified as a teacher through OMEA and the Association of Christian Schools International, Dr. Mowery has been registered as a music educator in the state of Ohio since 1962.
Dr. Mowery is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi honor Societies. Selected for several other awards over the years, he has been notably presented with a Larry Jones Memorial Award from Bluffton University. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Mowery has been cited in the 57th through 61st editions of Who's Who in America.
