Dr. Schulman is an ophthalmologist and educator of more than 45 years who for approximately 20 years has been serving as director of third-year medical school students at Louisiana State University (LSU) Health in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 2020. Recently concluding his incredible teaching career as an associate professor on campus in 2020, he taught students in the classroom for 32 years. Joining the faculty in 1988, he was also active on several medical school admissions boards and committees and until three years ago was an admissions committee member for the LSU Health Sciences Center since 2006.
As a physician, Dr. Schulman specializes in treating patients with various retina issues and uveitis, a form of eye inflammation, as well as other common eye conditions at his practice in Shreveport, Louisiana. Being a part of something greater than himself, he also oversees a free clinic at Saint Mark's Church for indigent patients. Among other services, the program includes providing free eyeglasses to those who cannot afford them. Established more than 25 years ago, it is one of the longest running eye clinics in the nation.
Dr. Schulman was a reviewer for three professional publications: Current Eye Research, The American Journal of Ophthalmology, and the Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. An alumnus of Goddard College, Dr. Schulman received a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts and sciences and liberal studies in 1971. He was then accepted to Chicago Medical School, which is a graduate school of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, where he received a Doctor of Medicine in 1975. After medical school, Dr. Schulman had the opportunity to participate in an ophthalmology residency. He also spent 3 years completing vitreoretinal fellowships at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. Finding the opportunity quite stimulating, he quickly discovered a passion for this specific area of medicine. Additionally, Dr. Schulman is board certified in ophthalmology.
Recognized for his achievements, Dr. Schulman was nominated for Elite American Educators. He also received a Prestigious Honor Award from The Vitreous Society (now known as the American Society of Retinal Specialists).
