Having distinguished herself as an exemplary businessperson, Ms. Hutchins has found success as the chairperson of both MBH Farms Inc. since 1986 and the Compotite Corporation since 1989. Founding MBH Farms, an Angus cattle farm, as its president and chief executive officer in 1986, she continues to serve in that role. In 1987, she was named as the vice president of development at Compotite Corporation. Earning increasing responsibility, she eventually took over the company, where she worked for nearly three decades as the president and chief executive officer. Ms. Hutchins is quite proud to have taken over for her father, who previously owned the business. Under her guidance, Compotite continued to serve as a pioneer in the manufacturing of American made waterproof membranes and tile settings.
Ms. Hutchins received a Bachelor of Arts from Radcliffe College at Harvard University in 1961, and later earned an Associate of Applied Science from Farmingdale State College, State University of New York, in 1985. Following the conclusion of her time at Harvard, she began her career as a junior mathematician for the Shell Development Company in Emeryville, California, in 1961. She subsequently worked abroad as a mathematician for British Petroleum in London between 1964 and 1965. Returning to the United States, Ms. Hutchins was hired as a management consultant for McKinsey and Company in New York.
Having long cultivated a passion for mathematics, Ms. Hutchins was especially grateful for her time spent at Shell, where she had the opportunity to take continuing education courses at the University of California at Berkeley and worked on several mathematical models for the oil industry, which was very exciting. When she later ran her family business, Ms. Hutchins was able to utilize her skills to better immerse herself in the building industry.
Ms. Hutchins published several works during her career with Shell and McKinsey. Throughout this period, she authored "Solution of Differential Equations with Random Input" in 1962, followed by "Partition Programming: Primal Form for Linear Problems" in 1963. Ms. Hutchins also edited the "Operations Research-Management Science Bulletin" at McKinsey & Co. between 1965 and 1967.
Committed to various civic initiatives, Ms. Hutchins was a trustee for the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Brunswick, Maine, between 1978 and 1988. She was also the vice president of the Royal Music Foundation in New York, and a trustee of the Long Island Biological Association in New York. Furthermore, Ms. Hutchins was greatly invested in her alma mater at Harvard University, for which she was elected to the Board of Overseers in 1994, and served as the Board's President from 1999-2000 She also served on many Harvard Visiting Committees, including the Advisory Committee on Honorary Degrees. Presently, Ms. Hutchins is active on the advisory committee of the Columbia Land Conservancy and the American Farmland Trust.
Named to the national waterproofing standards committee of the American National Standards Institute in 1988, Ms. Hutchins is also an instrumental figure with several other professional organizations. Namely, she is a past president of the Harvard Radcliffe Club of Long Island and a former board director of the Harvard Alumni Association. Recognized with an Honorary Degree from the Royal College of Music in London in 1979, Ms. Hutchins was also the recipient of the Harvard Medal from Harvard University in 2004 in recognition of outstanding service, leadership and commitment to the university.
