Reaching the pinnacle of her career when she was selected by her alma mater, Lincoln University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to serve as its 14th president, Dr. Allen manages the aforementioned institution's finances, academics and human resources aspects of school operations. She has successfully impacted the retention rate of students at the historically black college, with more and more students graduating year over year. She has also strengthened Lincoln University's liberal arts program and has implemented many upgrades to its facilities. Dr. Allen hopes to remain active with Lincoln University in the coming years before retiring and aspires to cement a solid liberal arts base as well as a rigorous curriculum for graduate students.
Dr. Allen's tenure in academia and administration includes former appointments at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina as a provost, a vice chancellor for academic affairs, and a professor of psychology. During her years in North Carolina, she was instrumental in many aspects of revising curriculum, forming two doctoral programs, and raising over $10 million for various projects, scholarships and student necessities. Dr. Allen formerly worked for Brown University as an interim assistant to the president, a teacher in African studies, an associate provost, the director of institutional diversity and a member of the university steering committee on slavery and justice.
Furthermore, Dr. Allen found success for nearly 15 years in various teaching roles and as the chairman of the department of Afro-American studies and roles at Smith College. He was likewise invited to Yale University, lecturing in the department of psychology and African and Afro-American studies for two years. To better support her career, Dr. Allen was a member of the maternal and child health grant review committee through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1997 to 2001.
Writing extensively, Dr. Allen notably co-authored a book review in 1989, titled "Ordinary Black Women," and has contributed articles to various scholarly journals. She was also appointed as a reviewer for a multitude of peer reviewed journals such as the Journal of Adolescent Research, the Journal of Applied Social Psychology and the Journal of Black Psychology. As an expert in her field, Dr. Allen has become a frequent speaker for various professional organizations as well.
Highly educated, Dr. Allen initially earned a Bachelor of Art in psychology at Lincoln University in 1981. She continued her academic efforts at Howard University, obtaining a Master of Science in experimental psychology in 1984 and a Doctor of Philosophy in developmental psychology in 1988. Dr. Allen also pursued a postdoctoral fellowship and began her career as a postdoctoral associate at Yale University, completed the management program at Smith College and studied at Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management.
To remain aware of developments in the healthcare field, Dr. Allen has been affiliated with the American Psychological Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. He is additionally active as an adviser to the Commission to Commemorate the History of Slavery in Rhode Island and a member of The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. Dr. Allen previously flourished as the president and a member of board of directors of the Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County in Winston-Salem.
Dr. Allen's vast variety of accolades include a 1992 Junior Faculty Teaching Award, a 1994 President's Annual Award for the promotion of the Smith design for diversity, and a 1999 Black Alliance Faculty Award from Smith College. She also accepted a Woman of Vision Award from the YMCA of Winston-Salem in 2013. Subsequently, Dr. Allen was honored with a Black History Month Community Service Award from Salem Lodge in Winston-Salem in 2014.
