A renowned ophthalmologist, health care administrator, scholar, and educator, Dr. Tsai has earned distinction as the president of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai in New York City. Considered an expert in diagnosing and managing complex cases of glaucoma in patients, he notably specializes in the treatment of various forms of surgery, including glaucoma implant surgery and trabeculectomy with antimetabolite surgery. Dr. Tsai is also instrumental in the classroom and clinical setting as the inaugural Delafield-Rodgers professor and system chairperson of ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Garnering a reputation for his expertise over the past 25 years, Dr. Tsai began his academic career in 1995 as an assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at Vanderbilt University in the school of medicine. He later taught and directed the glaucoma division at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia University between 2001 and 2006. Dr. Tsai was subsequently recruited by Yale University in the school of medicine, where he excelled as the inaugural Robert R. Young professor and chairperson of ophthalmology and visual science. He was also appointed as the chief of ophthalmology at Yale-New Haven Hospital, a position he held until 2014.
A focused and driven leader, Dr. Tsai has been involved on the education program planning committee of the National Eye Institute at the National Institutes of Health and the scientific advisory panel of the National Medical Research Council in Singapore (2010-2019). Conducting extensive research in his field, he has studied such topics as the surgical outcomes of patients with glaucoma, evaluation of neuroprotective agents, and the development of advanced vision testing techniques. Dr. Tsai's studies have been documented in more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, many of which have been cited by his peers, as well as book chapters and medical textbooks. He has also served on the editorial board for several medical journals and as a manuscript reviewer for more than 100 scientific publications.
An alumnus of Amherst College, Dr. Tsai earned a Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude, in neuroscience in 1985. Shortly thereafter, he received a Doctor of Medicine at Stanford University in 1989 before completing an internship in medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Southern California, Doheny Eye Institute, in Los Angeles. Dr. Tsai subsequently completed a glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, and a second fellowship at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He also obtained a Master of Business Administration at Vanderbilt University in the graduate school of management in 1998. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Tsai is board certified through the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Tsai is an elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the New York Academy of Medicine. Additionally, he is the past chairperson of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's global ophthalmic news and education network advisory board and the current incoming president of the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology. Dr. Tsai is also a prominent member of the American Ophthalmological Society and the American Eye Study Club and the past secretary of the English language region for the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology.
Selected for a multitude of awards during his prestigious career, Dr. Tsai recently received the Physician Scientist Award from Fight for Sight, Inc. (2015) and Secretariat Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (2015 and 2020). He was also bestowed with a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Southern California's Doheny Eye Institute in 2013, a Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2009, and among other recognitions, a Visionary Award from Fight for Sight Inc. in 2007.
