Mr. Solomons, a talented dancer, choreographer and dance critic with a long history of excellence in the arts and entertainment industry, is best known for his work in postmodern and experimental dance. While pursuing his undergraduate degree in architecture, he began studying as a member of Dance Makers, a local company in Massachusetts. Upon graduating from M.LT, Mr. Solomons relocated to New York City, where he continued to master his craft. Originally hired by Donald McKayle as a dance soloist in 1961, he also performed with several other renowned companies, including Martha Graham, Pearl Lang, and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
By 1972, Mr. Solomons had branched out on his own, forming the Solomons Company/Dance in New York City as artistic director. He also spent two years as dean and artistic director at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, 1976 to 1978. In 1996, he closed The Solomons Company/Dance and subsequently founded PARADIGM with a more mature group of dancers over fifty, with whom he toured the country and gained critical recognition from 1996 until 2011. While excelling for many years in the industry, Mr. Solomons also became a dance writer, publishing his professional reviews in such prominent publications as Village Voice, Ballet News, Metro Daily and other well-known dance publications, including his own blog, www.solomons-says.com.
In the classroom, Mr. Solomons joined the faculty of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU) from 1992 to 2014. Teaching contemporary dance technique, improvisation and choreographic research, he rose from a full-time teaching appointment to a full arts professor of dance. He simultaneously taught at various other institutions part-time as an associate professor of dance, including the University of California Los Angeles and Texas Christian University. Additionally, Mr. Solomons found success as a guest lecturer, guest choreographer, artist-in residence and panelist for a multitude of dance companies, schools, arts councils, and other dance organizations. In 2006 and 2007, he was honored to be named Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar, touring various universities across the U.S.
Boasting a portfolio that includes choreographing over 170 dances for dance companies and universities, Mr. Solomons also made numerous TV appearances and served as a U.S. Information Agency consultant on behalf of the National Dance Company in Tanzania, East Africa, and Argentina. Between 20 I0 and 2018, he spent nearly a decade as a guest artist touring Europe with choreographers like Ezster Salamon, Richard Seagal, Johannes Wieland, and Alexandra Bachsetzis. He originally studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music before acquiring a Bachelor of Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Mr. Solomons secured many production and creation grants from New York State Council on the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts. In recognition of his achievements, he was honored by the American Dance Guild with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Dance in 2019. He also received two Bessie Awards, which is the highest award bestowed to downtown performers and indie groups. Other recognitions to Mr. Solomons's credit include a Balasaraswat/Beineke Distinguished Teaching Award in 2004, a Robert A. Moo Award as a Distinguished MIT Artist/Alumnus in 2001, and a Master Teacher Award from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1996. Since 1996, he has performed as guest artist with International dance makers, like Eszter Salamon, Johannes Wieland, Richard Siegal, Boris Charmatz, and Alexandra Bachzetsis.
