She previously flourished as a disability analyst for a private practice in Montgomery County and at Cleveland Public Schools, where she served in a variety of positions, including as the assistant principal, guidance counselor and business teacher. During an earlier stage of her career, Dr. Hagel served as an adult education business teacher at Parma Public Schools from 1960 to 1963 and a legal secretary of Van Aken, Whiting, Arnold, Bond and Withers between 1959 and 1962.
Beyond her primary endeavors, Dr. Hagel found success as the owner and the designer of Joy for More, a jewelry company specializing in semi-precious earrings and necklaces. The author of "Analysis of Interventions Used to Improve 9th Grade Black Students' Math Scores" in 1990, she contributes her expertise with music in the form of articles published via professional journals and presentations delivered at various universities and embassies. She is also a board member of the Washington International Piano Arts Council. Previously, Dr. Hagel maintained involvement as the president of Black Tie Inc. from 2011 to 2013 and remains on its board, the Beethoven Society of America between 1988 and 2011, the Northeast Ohio Personnel Guidance Association from 1975 until 1982, and on the boards of Embassy Series, and Arts for the Aging, Inc.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in business and German from Baldwin-Wallace University in 1959, Dr. Hagel continued her education at Case Western Reserve University, from which she graduated with a Master of Arts in psychology and counseling in 1967. She later earned a Master of Arts in education administration from John Carroll University in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology from Columbus Pacific University in 1990. Named among the Outstanding Young Women in America in 1970, Dr. Hagel was bestowed with the Excellence in Education Award from the United States Department of Education in 1988-1989.
