Donald Leonard Robinson Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Dr. Robinson celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Robinson is the Charles N. Clark professor emeritus of government and American studies at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts; he retired from this position in 2004. During his nearly four decades of teaching on campus, he taught an abundance of courses, was the director of American Studies, served as the Sylvia Dlugasch Bauman professor of American Studies, and as the department chairman of the government department. Dr. Robinson came to Smith from Cornell University in New York, where had previously taught between 1965 and 1966. At the end of his teaching career, he spent five years teaching political science at Amherst College.

As a scholar, Dr. Robinson's work focused on American political and constitutional development. He became an award-winning writer, publishing seven books as author, co-author, editor and co-editor. These books include "Slavery in the Structure of American Politics, 1765-1820" in 1971, which won the Anisfield-Wolf Award that same year, "To the Best of My Ability: The Presidency and the Constitution" in 1987, "Partners for Democracy: Crafting the New Japanese State under MacArthur" in 2002, "Town Meeting: Practicing Democracy in Rural New England" in 2011 and "History of the Town of Ashfield, Volume III, 1960-2010" in 2015. Dr. Robinson served on the editorial board of Presidential Studies Quarterly from 1987 to 2004 and has contributed a monthly column in the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Massachusetts, for more than a decade, covering both politics and culture.

Dr. Robinson's career includes service as a consultant for the Ford Foundation. He was an advisor and panelist on the PBS television series "The Constitution: That Delicate Balance" and has lectured about the U.S. Constitution overseas in Israel, Japan, China, Hong Kong and the U.K. Dr. Robinson was a visiting professor at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, and a visiting fellow in political science at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and Saint Antony's College in Oxford, England.

Among his civic engagements, Dr. Robinson served as a trustee for the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts since 1988. He formerly served as the chairperson of the Patient and Family Advisory Council at Cooley Dickinson Hospital and as senior warden for Saint John's Episcopal Church. During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Robinson also served in various capacities with the Democratic City Committee, the Northampton Planning Board and the New England Regional Commission.

Dr. Robinson was fortunate to receive numerous scholarships that paid for his education. He first studied at Yale University, where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1958. He earned a Master of Divinity at the Union Theological Seminary in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy at Cornell University in 1966. During the length of his educational efforts, Dr. Robinson became a member of the honorable society of Phi Beta Kappa and, throughout his career, was a member of the American Political Science Association.
