Inspired to pursue a career in service to others, Dr. de Savorgnani earned a Bachelor of Arts from Radcliffe College in the early 1960s. Subsequently, she obtained a diploma in nursing through the Coordinated Program of her alma mater and the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. Initially, she worked in the field as a clinical nurse for the Department of Public Health in Washington, DC. A year later she transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Naples, Italy, where she served for the following two years as a staff nurse in pediatrics. Dr. de Savorgnani was later active as a public health nurse for the Department of Human Resources in Washington, DC.
During the 1970s, Dr. de Savorgnani attended graduate school at the University of Hawaii while being employed by the university's Newborn Psychological Research Laboratory and by Kapiolani Hospital as a staff nurse in obstetrics. Graduating with a Master of Public Health degree, she joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps in 1975. During her military nursing career, she gained valuable expertise in the field of emergency nursing and ambulatory healthcare at naval medical facilities in San Diego, Pensacola, Naples, Italy, and Newport, Rhode Island. Advancing into leadership roles, she became Head, Regional/Fleet Support, for the 19 northeastern states, followed by serving as Head, Healthcare Plans Special Projects and later as Head, Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion, for the Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. At this time she completed her academic efforts with a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Nova University. Further executive leadership positions followed in Jacksonville and Key West, Florida, and Lemoore, California. Dr. de Savorgnani was then selected as Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Medical Clinics, United Kingdom, and concluded her military career as Head, Clinical Plans and Management, and then Assistant Deputy Chief, Medical Operations Support (Acting) at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in 2003.
Since retiring from the U.S. Navy, Dr. de Savorgnani has been employed as an executive assistant with the U.S. Defense Attaché Office and an administrative assistant with the Federal Benefits Unit in London. Certified in advanced nursing administration, she is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and affiliated with the Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S., Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, the Academy of Management, the American Public Health Association, the American Nurses Association and the Navy Nurse Corps Association. In conjunction with her work, she has published numerous articles on safety and health, quality assurance, professional nursing, management and career development. She has also dedicated herself to those less fortunate as a volunteer teacher for English as a second language, and a volunteer with women's homeless shelters. In a career filled with highlights, Dr. de Savorgnani is especially proud of initiating programs in health promotion and nursing case management for the U.S. Navy.
In light of her professional excellence, Dr. de Savorgnani was awarded a Legion of Merit, five Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the National Defense Medal (one star), a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service ribbon (7 stars). Additionally, she was honored with the Clara Barton Award and the Jane A. Delano Award from the American Red Cross as well as the Director's Award, Human Resources Center Europe and a Certificate of Appreciation Award for her support during Operation Desert Storm. In recent civilian positions she has earned annual performance awards.
Publications such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women have also recognized her exceptional work.
