Mr. Johnson, of the Law Office of Richard Fred Johnson, founded his firm in 2014 after a successful tenure at several other leading organizations throughout Chicago. A recognized expert in personal injury cases, especially pertaining to claims against railroads, he has also handled a multitude of cases involving insurance, admiralty and maritime law, as well as other complex cases. Supporting his professional endeavors, Mr. Johnson has been a prominent member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel, the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel and the National Immigrant Justice Center.
After graduating from law school, Mr. Johnson clerked for the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago from 1969 to 1970. He was subsequently hired as an associate at Lord, Bissell and Brook LLP, where he advanced to a partnership between 1977 and 2004. A large, international law firm with over a dozen locations throughout the U.S., Mr. Johnson notably worked at the firm's Chicago office. He subsequently worked for another decade as a partner at Hughes, Socol, Piers, Resnick and Dym Ltd., a Chicago-based firm that focuses on approximately 20 different disciplines.
Mr. Johnson notably ran for Cook County judge in 2004. Over the course of his legal career, he also lectured frequently in his field. Moreover, Mr. Johnson has contributed numerous articles to leading law journals and authored 'Interjurisdictional Depositions' in the Illinois Civil Practice Guide in 2021.
A dedicated advocate on behalf of his local community, Mr. Johnson has spent his free time volunteering as a cook at the Cook County Jail and in various capacities for the Chicago History Museum, the Center for Elder and Disability Law, and the Northwestern Bluhm Legal Clinic. He has also been active as the president and a board director of the Old Irving Park Clinic. In 2006, Mr. Johnson was ordained a Catholic deacon by the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Affected by a speech impediment while coming of age, Mr. Johnson sought a career that would require him to speak frequently, and has long been intrigued by the field of legal service. After graduating from high school, he attained a Bachelor of Science from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1966, and was subsequently accepted to Northwestern University, where he completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence, cum laude, in 1969. Mr. Johnson has been admitted to practice law in Illinois, the U.S. District Court for the Northern Districts of Illinois and Indiana, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second, Fifth, Seventh, and Ninth Circuits, the Supreme Court of the United States, and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois.
Selected for numerous awards since becoming a lawyer, Mr. Johnson first received an American Jurisprudence Award in Evidence in 1968. Others accolades to his credit include an Edward J. Lewis II Award for Pro Bono Services from the Chicago Bar Foundation and a Meritorious Service Award from the Board of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel. Mr. Johnson has also been named as a Leading Lawyer by the Illinois Leading Lawyers Network, has been rated Highly Qualified by the Chicago Bar Association, and is an AV Rated Attorney through Martindale Hubbell.
