SYRACUSE, NY, June 15, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Wendy Harris has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Inspired by her mother, who was a talented artist and garnered a full four year ride at Syracuse University at the age of 16, and her grandfather who as a recognized artist taught oil, watercolor, lithography, etching, and film. Ms. Harris earned a Bachelor of Science in speech communications from Syracuse University (her father having forbidden her from studying art in college). She returned to Syracuse University as a fundraiser in the 1980's and used remitted tuition to study under Gary Trento, Jerome Witkin among others. She also studied independently with Wolf Kahn and Eric Aho. Later, Ms. Harris was introduced to pastels and was smitten.
Early in her art career, Ms. Harris was invited into a New York State pastel exhibition where she received the Judge's Choice Award. Soon after she took an honorable mention at a national pastel exhibition the Edward Hopper House. She is internationally published. She was in the inaugural issue of the "Stone Canoe: A Journal of Arts and Ideas for Upstate NY."
An accomplished artist, Ms. Harris was recognized in 2011 Best of Show Women Artists of the Finger Lakes, 2012 Best of Show for the Plein Air art at the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival. She also accepted the Outstanding Landscape Award at the Third Annual Northeast National Pastel Show. First Place at the Plein Air Contest in 2003. Throughout her successful career, Ms. Harris has been incredibly proud of being asked to judge the Seneca Lake Plein Air Festival in 2015 and the Sackets Harbor Plein Air festival in 2017.
In 2014 Ms. Harris had the greatest reward of her career when Upstate Medical opened its $74M Cancer Treatment Center entirely decorated with regional art. A committee of 16 disparate people reviewed 1,600 images from 80 artists and Wendy had the ONLY unanimous vote and thereby received the only painting commission in the Center. The hospital wanted to decorate the center with regional art because the research is so compelling…. treatment outcomes are improved when a patient settles into a painting it causes them to down regulate their anxiety (abstracts don't work)! The hospital requested eight more images from her for permanent display in the cancer center. In the last year, Ms. Harris has also sold them another image for permanent display. This whole adventure and new understanding of the power of art (validated again and again worldwide) is her most treasured involvement and accomplishment.
As a dedicated member of her community, Ms. Harris is active with the ArtRage Gallery, the Syracuse Symphony and the Everson Museum of Art with donations of art and dollars. She maintains her professional affiliation with the Pastel Society of America and the Cloud Appreciation Society among others. Over the years, she has attributed her professional success to following her own aesthetic interests in landscape and skyscapes. Looking toward the future Ms. Harris continues to accept commissions, give lessons in pastel, while helping people heal through art.
