After completing his residency work at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Terman was hired as an assistant director of outpatient psychiatry in 1963. He began his career in the practice of psychiatry. He then began his psychoanalytic training at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis in 1965. He maintained a practice in psychiatry and psychoanalysis thereafter.
A renowned expert in mental health, Dr. Terman has been recognized as one of the analysts that helped further the work of Heinze Kohut and what is now known as self-psychology, which is considered a contemporary form of psychoanalytic treatment. He was also instrumental in several significant aspects of clinical and developmental theory. Well regarded for his indelible impact on the field, Dr. Terman has contributed much of his research to various medical journals and, in 2010, co-authored and edited "The Fundamentalist Mindset," which brought a psychoanalytic understanding to social and political forces in history.
Impressed with the therapeutic power of psychoanalysis and how it has become such a unique tool in changing the lives of others, Dr. Terman was initially intrigued by psychology as a child, during which time he struggled with both his mother's depression and his own psychological issues.
To prepare for his career in medicine, he studied at the University of Chicago, where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine in 1955 and 1959, respectively. He subsequently interned at Philadelphia General Hospital and completed his residency at the Psychosomatic and Psychiatric Institute, Michael Reese Hospital, in Chicago. He also trained to be a psychoanalyst at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis from 1965 to 1972. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Terman is board certified in psychiatry and neurology.
Contributory to his success, Dr. Terman is a board member of the International Association of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology and a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He was also elected as a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Terman has been cited in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America and the 21st edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
