ESSEX, CT, June 16, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Jon A. Peterson with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Peterson celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Inspired by his mother, Helen Hoff Peterson (Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, 1991), who achieved a master's degree in history at The Ohio State University, and the distinguished scholarship of his father, Alvah Peterson, Professor of Entomology at The Ohio State University, Jon A. Peterson majored in European history at Swarthmore College, graduating with high honors, 1957. He then pursued American history, earning a Master of Arts degree from The Ohio State University, 1959, and Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University, 1967, where he studied under Prof. Oscar Handlin. He began his teaching career at Queens College of The City University of New York in 1966, retiring as professor emeritus in 2005.

At Queens College, Dr. Peterson served as director of the master's degree program in history and as chair of the Queens College history department, 1990-1994. Deeply interested in American urban history, he chaired the Columbia University Seminar on the City, 1973-1976, produced a widely used study manual on the history of the Borough of Queens, and authored major essays on American sanitary reform, 1984-1890; George Edwin Waring, Jr., sanitary engineer; the City Beautiful movement in the Unites States; and the 1901 redesign of Washington, DC.

Decades of intense scholarship on the origins of the American city planning movement culminated with The Birth of City Planning in the United States: 1840-1917, which won numerous accolades, including the Spiro Kostof Book Award, 2005, from the Society of Architectural Historians. Throughout his career, Dr. Peterson regularly participated in the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, the Society of Architectural Historians, the Urban History Association, and the Society for American City and Regional Planning History. In retirement, he returned to his youthful passion for watercolor painting.
