Driven to pursue a career in service to others, Mr. Shelton earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Oberlin College and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard Law School during the 1960s. He was subsequently admitted to practice to the Maryland State Bar Association, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. He began his career as an associate special counsel for the House Judiciary Committee during the Nixon Impeachment in 1974. In the 35-plus years that followed, Mr. Shelton has excelled as a partner with Venable LLP, through which he has worked with such notable clients as the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Anne Arundel Hospital, and a number of banking and corporate clients. He also has had considerable experience in the area of project finance.
Due to his considerable expertise, Mr. Shelton was consistently recruited to lead complex, controversial and high-profile cases with Venable LLP. This has continued with Shelton and Carey LLP, with which he currently serves. Since establishing his practice, he has negotiated a construction contract to develop a $2 billion hydro-dam in Guyana on behalf of the developer, Southern Caribbean Cable Company. Following this accomplishment, Mr. Shelton was offered the position of chairman of the board, which he accepted.
In conjunction with his work in the field, Mr. Shelton found success as an executive committee member with the Bar Association of Baltimore City. Dedicated to his community, he continues as trustee emeritus with the Maryland Institute College of Art, has been a trustee of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Sterling College, and a board nominee with United Medical Center.
He served as Chair of Sterling College and the Maryland Institute College of Art. He served for many years as trustee of the for profit affiliate of the Johns Hopkins Institutions. Although his career has been filled with highlights, he is incredibly proud of being consistently AV-Rated through Martindale-Hubbell and instrumental in saving Greater Southeast Hospital in Washington, D.C. through his work as an attorney.
