Eminently qualified in his field, Mr. Meyerink earned an Associate of Science in family and local history, followed by a Bachelor of Science and a Master in Library Science from Brigham Young University. With a keen interest in genealogy, the study of families and the tracing of their lineages, he felt compelled to help people answer questions about their forebears and entered the publishing field. His award-winning reference book, Printed Source, was published in 1998.
From 1991 until 2013, Mr. Meyerink excelled as an adjunct professor at Brigham Young, where he taught family history and religion courses at the Salt Lake City center, including a senior capstone course on professional paths and credentials in genealogy. In 1996 he founded the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, served as the director for several years and, through 2014, developed various courses, planned classes and hired instructors.
Outside of academia, Mr. Meyerink served as the first vice president of acquisitions at Ancestry, the largest for-profit genealogy company in the world, now based in Lehi, Utah, from 1996 to 1998. In this role, he negotiated major data acquisitions, planned marketing and product development and assisted the company in its online transition. Fluent in German, Mr. Meyerink has served with distinction as the director of German studies at the National Institute of Genealogical Studies, an online course provider, since 1988. In 2003, he co-founded and served as vice president of ProGenealogists until its 2010 acquisition by Ancestry. He is currently a master genealogist and research manager of AncestryProGenealogists, an intensive research division of Ancestry.
Mr. Meyerink has written numerous articles and book reviews for the Genealogical Journal, Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly, New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, The Genealogist, and many other publications in his chosen field. He is also an accomplished lecturer, having delivered hundreds of lectures at many local, state and national genealogical conferences throughout the U.S. and Canada, most prominently including the National Genealogical Society and the annual Brigham Young University Family History Conference. Mr. Meyerink's honors include the Silver Tray Award for Genealogical Scholarship, bestowed by the Utah Genealogical Association in 1998, being named a Fellow of the association in 2002, the 10-Year Outstanding Leadership Award from the same association in 2005 and the Founding Father Award of Merit from the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy in 2020.
Mr. Meyerink attributes his great success to the support of his colleagues, friends and his wife. Looking toward the future, he would like to create an instructional website before entering retirement.
