SAUNDERSTOWN, RI, June 25, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michele C. Leavitt has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
An artist and educator, Ms. Leavitt established Art Works Wonders in 2010, through which she creates, exhibits, and sells fine arts and fine crafts. She is proficient in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, collage, quilting and oriental carpet design. Throughout the course of her career, she has garnered experience teaching elementary through college students, as well as adults and seniors through community instruction. Moreover, she found success teaching drawing courses and producing student art exhibits at the Community College of Rhode Island from 2002 to 2012. Additionally, Ms. Leavitt excelled on the pre-college faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design between 2002 and 2010 and was also a contributing artist at Public Art Works from 2007 until 2009.
Her early influences were her mother, who was a quilter, and her father, who was a printer. Both of them had her studying grids, spacing and color combinations. In addition, while coming of age, Michele became infatuated with art through frequent trips to assorted New York City museums. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art and design from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1972. Combining her education with her mother's quilting lessons, she developed a body of work based on a combination of practical piecework and conceptual ideas. While garnering acclaim and recognition for her series of big, bold quilts, Ms. Leavitt earned a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Cornell University in 1985.
Ms. Leavitt's artwork has been displayed in various solo and group exhibitions over the span of her career, notably including the Newport Art Museum exhibition, Montgomery College of Art in Maryland, the Lowell Quilt Festival in Massachusetts, the Seventh Annual Fiber Arts Showcase in Vancouver, Washington, and the Trashformations exhibit at the Fuller Craft Museum, which was organized by the founding director of the Fuller craft, and was a traveling exhibition. In addition, her work has been included in collections across Rhode Island and nationwide, including at the Eliot Porter House in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the University of Virginia Art Museum, and the Connecticut Graphic Art Collection. Throughout the course of her career, she has maintained affiliations with the Studio Art Quilt Association, the Jamestown Art Center, West Bay Open Studios, the Providence Art Club, the Expansion Arts Advisory Committee and the Rhode Island Foundation. In addition, Ms. Leavitt has contributed her teachings and artwork to numerous art publications.
In honor of her late husband, who worked as the museum director at Cornell University and the interim director of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, Ms. Leavitt has established a scholarship fund to support promising art and art history students at the Community College of Rhode Island. For her contributions to the field, she is proud to have been a recipient of the Projects Grant for Public Art Works from the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts and the Individual Artist's Award for New Works from the Rhode Island Foundation. Ms. Leavitt continues teaching courses at the Wickford Art Association in addition to other local art organizations.
