With over 35 years of experience to his credit, Kenneth Batts, DO, has exceled as a family physician with a focus in sports medicine. Following his retirement from the U.S. Army, he currently cares for military members. For the last five years, he has served as an approving authority for medical evaluation boards at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, focusing on orthopedic injuries and conditions for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Prior to his current position, he served in multiple leadership roles in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for 30 years. He fulfilled the role as Chief of the Family Medicine Department at both Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii (2003-2011) and Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg (2011- 2014). Earlier in his career, he was Director of the Clark Health Clinic at Fort Bragg (1999- 2003), the Command Surgeon of Camp Doha in Kuwait (1998-1999), and the Director of Primary Care and Sports Medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center (1993-1998).

Alongside his meaningful career responsibilities, Dr. Batts has devoted time throughout his life towards civic endeavors. Most notably, he was the President of the Hawaii Academy of Family Physicians, as well as the Medical Director for the Special Olympics of Hawaii from 1993 to 1998. Furthermore, Dr. Batts continues his involvement with professional organizations like the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Batts' interest in medicine piqued at a young age, stemming from interactions with various doctors and nurses at his hometown community hospital in Farmville, Virginia. As he began to learn more about medicine, family medicine seemed to be a natural fit as the specialty allowed him to provide care for all ages. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Catawba College in 1980, he attended the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 1985. Three years later, he concluded his residency in Family Medicine at Womack Army Medical Center, and later went on to complete a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Hughston Clinic in 1992.

For excellence in his career, Dr. Batts has been the recipient of numerous honors and accolades. He notes his most significant honor as the recipient of the Michael J. Scotti Jr., MD, Family Physician of the Year Award by the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians in 2008. As an accomplished undergraduate student, he received the U.S. Army's Health Professions scholarship to attend medical school. Dr. Batts has not only been known for his academic pursuits. He attended Catawba College under a football scholarship and was also awarded the Whitener Award as the outstanding male graduate.

Dr. Batts attributes much of his success to those who inspired him throughout his life: his parents as well as the professors, teachers, coaches, and mentors during his time in the military. Furthermore, Dr. Batts stresses the importance of his family's contribution towards his own achievements as a well-rounded physician. Looking toward the future, Dr. Batts intends to continue practicing medicine for as long as he is able, while also enjoying the world around him by fishing, gardening, and traveling with his family.
