After a successful career in law spanning nearly 30 years, Ms. Kaunitz retired in 2000 after eight years as the associate general counsel for Baptist Health Systems in Jacksonville, Florida, from 1992-2000. Highly acclaimed for her expertise in health law, she initially worked at the American Hospital Association in Chicago, IL as a senior staff attorney from 1978-1982. While at AHA she filed an Amicus Curiae Brief with the Supreme Court of the United States. Ms. Kaunitz also found success with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta as an HHS Office of the General Counsel attorney/advisor, which was a career highlight. She then became Vice-President of legal affairs for Methodist Hospital in Jacksonville, FL between 1984 and 1992.
After law school, Ms. Kaunitz sought opportunities in the health law field. It gave her the chance to combine her interest in health law with corporate law and she enjoyed public speaking and publishing in newspapers, journals and books.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, and raised in Fort Plain, NY, Ms. Kaunitz later graduated from Goucher College in Baltimore with an AB bachelor's degree with high honors in 1973. She was sworn into Phi Beta Kappa by Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1974. She subsequently earned a law degree at Albany Law School of Union University in 1976. She was admitted to practice law in New York, Illinois, Florida and Georgia (having passed 4 bar examinations). Ms. Kaunitz has represented cases before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the U.S. Court Appeals for the Fifth, Ninth and D.C. Circuits.
Ms. Kaunitz was a member of the health law forum committee of the American Bar Association and the health law committee of the Florida Bar, the American Academy of Hospital Attorneys, the American Society of Law and Medicine and the National Health Lawyers Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Kaunitz has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
