Recently named as the dean of engineering at the University of Wyoming in 2021 (interim dean since 2019), Dr. Wright first began his career as a faculty member on the Laramie campus in 2003. Joining the department of electrical and computer engineering, he later served as an associate department head before attaining a full professorship in 2015. His tenure at the university came on the heels of Dr. Wright serving for nearly a decade at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs between 1991 and 2002, where he successfully taught and mentored cadets who went on to become future leaders of the U.S. Air Force. In addition to his commitments in academia, he notably consults for various law firms on patent cases.
Dr. Wright first joined the U.S. Armed Forces in 1973, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Over the next eight years, he rose from the rank of a seaman recruit to a petty officer first class before serving another two years in the U.S. Navy Reserves. In 1982, he joined the U.S. Air Force, advancing from a second lieutenant to a lieutenant colonel. Dr. Wright also served as an avionics design engineer at the U.S. Air Force Avionics Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and as a division chief of the space test range space division and director of advanced satellite systems at the Space Systems Division at Los Angles Air Force Base in California. He retired from the military in 2003.
Presently, Dr. Wright serves on the board of directors of the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Symposium. He is also a member of the National Computer Engineering PE Exam Subcommittee for NCEES. Between 1983 and 1986, Dr. Wright was active as a member of the executive committee at the National Aerospace and Electronics Conference in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Wright's many research interests have included signal and image processing, real-time embedded computer systems, biomedical instrumentation and engineering education. Among his achievements in the field, he was responsible for developing a unique process to detect incoming missile warheads for the Strategic Defense Initiative and for developing a robotic laser system for eye surgery. He also became a successful writer, co-authoring four chapters in various books, co-authoring and editing the second edition of "An Introduction to Electrical Engineering" in 2002 and co-authoring the third edition of "Real-Time Digital Signal Processing" in 2017. Dr. Wright has also contributed over 260 scholarly articles in various peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings on such topics as digital signal processing chips, image sensors, real-time systems, biomimetics and infrared imaging, and has served as a reviewer for several professional publications as well.
Involved in many activities in relation to public education, Dr. Wright found success as a coordinator for Career Motivation at the Dayton School District, a coordinator for the Young Astronaut Program at Los Angeles School District and a speaker on the topic of engineering careers at Colorado Springs School District. Dr. Wright was also a volunteer for the health care system as a computer/network consultant for Project Transitions, a nonprofit organization that founded the first and only AIDS hospice in central Texas. Located in Austin, the organization cares for patients with AIDS.
Inspired by his father and brother, both of whom were engineers, Dr. Wright earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, summa cum laude, at Louisiana Tech University in 1983 and a Master of Science in electrical engineering at Purdue University in 1988. He subsequently attained a doctorate degree in electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in 1996. Dr. Wright's degrees were all funded by the military. Eminently qualified in his field, he is a registered professional engineer in both California and Wyoming.
Dr. Wright is a member of many industry-related organizations, including the American Society for Engineering Education, where he has been a division director-at-large for the computers in education division. He is also a member and former chairperson of the national committee for engineering licensure for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Additionally, Dr. Wright is active with the American Society for Engineering Education as a member of the computers in education division and the engineering dean's council. Furthermore, he has maintained his affiliation with the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Society, the Biomedical Engineering Society and the International Society for Optics and Photonics.
Dr. Wright has received several military and civilian awards, medals and accommodations. To wit, he was bestowed with a Third Millennium Medal for Leadership and Contributions to the IEEE in 2000, a President's Award at the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Symposium in 2010, a Distinguished Service Award from the computers in education division of the American Society of Engineering Educators in 2018 and a Recognition Award from the Veterans Service Center at the University of Wyoming in 2019. In honor of his career in academia, Dr. Wright was recognized with a Tau Beta Pi Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2011 and an Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award in 2012.
