Among his many other noteworthy achievements, Dr. Spagnolo was the first to ever review patient outcome during the early history of intensive care units, the first to report of Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonitis in patients with lung cancer and the first to complete a prospective evaluation of short course therapy in the U.S. utilizing Isoniazid and Rifampin.
To better contribute to his community, Dr. Spagnolo was the former secretary and vice president of the National Association of VA Physicians, for which he has been elected as president since 2006.
Dr. Spagnolo initially concluded his undergraduate coursework at Washington and Jefferson College in 1961 before earning a Doctor of Medicine at Temple University in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine in 1965. He subsequently completed his residency at the VA Medical Center in Boston as a senior resident and chief resident in medicine. He later conducted a Harvard fellowship in pulmonary diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital after committing to two years of service with a U.S. Public Health Service as a officer and lieutenant commander at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta between 1966 and 1968. Certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Spagnolo is a licensed physician in Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, California and Florida.
Dr. Spagnolo was notably selected as a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Physicians. He is also affiliated with several other leading medical societies, including the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Medical Association and the National Association of Veterans Affairs Physicians and Dentists.
