Born into a family of strong faith, Dr. Misner was ordained as a priest by the Roman Catholic Church three years after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in 1958. He was subsequently appointed as an associate pastor at St. Basil Parish in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With the intention of teaching in a seminary, Dr. Misner earned a Doctor of Theology from the University of Munich in 1969. However, issues with the seminary's development prompted him to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Dr. Misner's academic career began at Boston College, where he thrived as an assistant professor of theology for six years. In 1979, he was recruited to fill the same role at Marquette University. Four years later, he advanced to an associate professor and continued to establish his reputation as a leading authority on European historical theology. After finding remarkable success at Marquette University for over 20 years, the Milwaukee-based Jesuit institution designated Dr. Misner as a professor emeritus of theology in 2002.
Throughout his 50-year career, Dr. Misner wrote and edited a series of historical books, including 1991's "Social Catholicism in Europe: From the Onset of Industrialization to the Second World War" and 2015's "Catholic Labor Movements in Europe." In the early to mid-1980s, he excelled as the president of the North America Academy of Ecumenists as well as the publications chairman of the College Theological Society. In addition to his family, Dr. Misner's work has been highly influenced by the developments in the twentieth century that led up to and followed the Second Vatican Council.
