As a teenager, Mr. Cornell became interested in chemistry, ecology, physics, and metallurgy. After building a few metallurgic furnaces in his backyard and studying ecology at Denison University one summer, he then focused his collegiate studies on polymers and metals. After earning a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from the University of Delaware, Mr. Cornell began his career as a materials properties engineer for General Electric. Mr. Cornell additionally obtained a Master of Science in material science from the University of Cincinnati. Mr. Cornell is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Xi academic honor societies.
Mr. Cornell subsequently served in multiple capacities with Eastman Kodak Company, Chemical Division, now known as the Eastman Chemical Company, for more than 25 years, including as a development engineer, senior engineer, marketing product supervisor, production supervisor, and manager, plastics technology and recycling. He also worked for the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers as Technical Director, DD Cornell Associates LLC, IRU LLC, and SBA-CCI Inc. He is a licensed professional engineer.
As an accomplished professional in his field, Mr. Cornell holds 16 U.S. patents in diverse fields. As a respected voice, he has published such professional work as "Recycling Polyesters by Chemical Depolymerization" for "Modern Polyesters: Chemistry and Technology of Polyesters and Copolyesters" and "Plastics Recycling: A Pragmatic Approach" for the ACS Symposium Series. Mr. Cornell has also found success as a peer reviewer for seven life cycle assessment studies and for EPA and other grant petitions and as an invited speaker at numerous industry conferences and contributor to technical and trade magazines.
Throughout his career, Mr. Cornell has been proud of being a contributor to SETAC's "Technical Framework for Life-Cycle Assessment" which led to 20 years of experience in advising on life cycle assessment. He likewise cites his work on a project with Eastman Kodak Company, for which he was the leader to commercialize polyethylene terephthalate for soft drink bottles as a highlight of his career. For his exceptional efforts in his career, Mr. Cornell was inducted into the Plastics Hall of Fame in 2018.
In order to remain aware of developments in his field, Mr. Cornell has been affiliated with the Society of Plastics Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the American Society for Metals, the Association of Plastic Recyclers, the National Association for Polyester Container Resources, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the American Chemistry Council. Over the years, he has attributed his professional success to many influential bosses and helpful colleagues. Looking toward the future, Mr. Cornell plans to retire while continuing his work as a volunteer naturalist in public parks.
