General Adams obtained an Associate of Science from Tarleton State University in 1950, followed by a Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University – Commerce, formerly known as East Texas State Teachers College, two years later. As the proud nephew of two uncles who served in World War II, he subsequently enlisted in the United States Air Force and learned to pilot legendary military aircraft such as the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress at Ramey Air Force Base in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Thereafter, he attended combat missile training, becoming an ICBM combat crew commander. As the Vietnam War loomed greater, he was recalled to the cockpit serving two tours in Vietnam; first flying C-141 transports, hauling cargo into the combat zone and casualties out. Thereafter, he was assigned for a year on remote duty in Thailand as combat support group Director of Operations, advancing in rank as his career continued.
General Adams earned a Master of Science Degree in military studies from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1973. While completing his education, he continued to serve simultaneously, as Director of Plans and Policy and in turn, Executive Officer to the Director, Defense Nuclear Agency. On returning to Air Force operations. As Strategic Air Command Wing Commander and subsequently, Air Division Commander, with promotion to Brigadier General. Thereafter, he was assigned to Headquarters, Strategic Air Command, promoted to Major General and subsequently, Chief of Staff, Strategic Air Command. He retired in 1983 to accept an offer to server as an Associate Director, Los Alamos National Laboratory; formerly the largest nuclear laboratory in the world.
In 1999, General Adams retired from his career in the private sector after thriving as the vice president of government systems at Andrew Corporation in Dallas for over 10 years. In exchange for his several decades of service with the U.S. Air Force, he has received a host of awards and decorations, such as the Distinguished Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal. Since his retirement, General Adams has also written 12 books, such as 2018's "Notable Encounters," which documents his previous interactions with military heroes, political figures and anyone who has played a pivotal role in his professional journey.
