After receiving a Bachelor of Science in physics and computer science from the University of California Irvine, Mr. Bates went on to study for a graduate degree. While studying at California State University, Long Beach, he became acquainted with an individual working at Hughes Aircraft and obtained an exclusive interview at the company. He eventually received a Master of Science in physics from California State University, Long Beach, and went on to work at GM Hughes for 13 years. Mr. Bates then became a principal photonic engineer at Raytheon Technologies. In his career, Mr. Bates also worked as an instructor of distance learning in optical engineering at the University of California, Irvine and president of the Optical Society of Southern California. He has also excelled as an instructor at the AFISK Shotokan School of Karate for more than 30 years.
As an advanced degree physicist and engineer, Mr. Bates has spent most of his career in the defense industry. He has published several papers in the field and holds 15 U.S. patents, which have solved issues within many different fields. With an expertise in optics and photonics, he works in optics specifying, modifying, and testing many infrared, CCD, vision and laser systems.
As a skilled professional, Mr. Bates was previously selected as a visiting research scholar at California State University, Los Angeles and also received the Innovators Award from GM Hughes. Throughout his career, he has been most proud of being able to work on the Airborne Laser project, where they converted a 747 airplane into a giant laser.
Mr. Bates has attributed his professional success to persistence and a willingness to take on new projects and opportunities. In his career, he has always tried to think of the next big idea that would advance the fields of science and engineering. He has maintained professional affiliation with the Optical Society of Southern California, for whom he served as past president, SPIE and the Optical Society of America. In his spare time, he enjoys singing, writing science fiction and practicing photography. Looking toward the future, Mr. Bates plans to start up his own company with colleagues in the optics and technology field.
