A native of China, Mr. Cong earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Nanjing Arts Institute in 1980, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the aforementioned institution six years later. In 1989, he was recruited as an instructor of Chinese art by Indiana University, Bloomington, where he also obtained a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking in 1994. Mr. Cong was subsequently appointed as a professor and head of the printmaking program at William Paterson University and has flourished at the New Jersey-based university for nearly 30 years.
Since 2001, Mr. Cong has also thrived as the leader of William Paterson University's Summer Art in China program, in which he travels to China with a group of students for an immersive study of Chinese art. In 2009, Mr. Cong founded the Center for Chinese Art at William Paterson University, which is the first center for Chinese art to be established at an American university. Four years later, he helped create the Chinese-American Art Faculty Association and currently excels as the organization's chairman of the board.
In addition to his teaching career, Mr. Cong is a prolific artist whose work has been exhibited all over the world. In 2015, he was awarded a solo art exhibition in China National Museum in Beijing, China. He has also given hundreds of presentations at many esteemed museums and universities. Mr. Cong intends to conduct further research on the merging of traditional Chinese art and modern contemporary art while encouraging his students to incorporate a wide range of artistic influences into their individual creative endeavors.
