Now retired, Mr. Layden was an accountant who enjoyed a long and fruitful career in various capacities for close to 50 years. Concluding his career as the director of finance and administrative services for the City of Sunnyside, Washington, in 2015, he was involved in his role for just over two years. His vast experience, however, includes numerous other local government positions, including as the finance director for the City of University Place, Washington, for six years between 2005 and 2011, as the financial director for the City of Gillette, Wyoming, for 25 years between 1980 and 2005, and as an accountant for the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut, for 11 years between 1969 and 1980. He also worked for a private organization, Dictaphone Corporation, in Bridgeport, as an accountant for two years at the beginning of his career from 1967 to 1969.
Mr. Layden's career in local government has extended into his personal life as well. He has served as a member of the Washington Finance Officers Association and in the same capacity on behalf of the Municipal Clerks and Treasurers in Wyoming. Today, he continues to remain active as a member of Kiwanis International and the Knights of Columbus.
An alumnus of Sacred Heart University, where Mr. Layden notably became active with Alpha Phi Omega and joined the school newspaper, he achieved a Bachelor of Arts in accounting and business management in 1967. He since completed coursework in municipal government in support of his profession as well. Enhancing his career, Mr. Layden has been a member of several instrumental career related organizations, including the Wyoming Association of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers, the Municipal Treasurer Association and the Government Financial Officers Association. Mr. Layden was recognized for his achievements by the City of Gillette with a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in the Financial Reporting Program from the Government Finance Officers Association every year between 2001 and 2005. He was also named by the Association of Wyoming as its 2003 Member of the Year. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Layden has been cited the 20th and 21st editions of Who's Who in the West and the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
