Upon coming to the United States from Perú in 1975, Dr. Garcés earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Social Work from Southwestern College in 1979. He subsequently completed a Master of Social Work through Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Work in 1985 and began as a psychiatric social worker for the Puerto Rican Family Institute Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in the South Bronx, New York. After four years, Dr. Garcés distinguished himself as a psychotherapist for Queens Neuropsychiatric/Institute in Queens, New York, and later in the Community Counseling Services on Long Island, New York, where he remains active today.
In the decades since joining Queens Neuropsychiatric Institute, Dr Garcés received a Doctor of Social Work degree from Yeshiva University (WWSSW) in 2002, and gained valuable expertise at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, Emergency Room, and Intensive Care Units. Alongside his work with Queens Neuropsychiatric Institute. He also works with people from all different lifestyles, ethnic and multicultural backgrounds. With more than three and a half decades of expertise to his credit, Dr. Garcés identifies his clients' major issues, encourages the exploration of feelings, emotions, and behaviors, and helps them to restore function through the implementation of an action plan.
Considering his vast knowledge, Dr. Garcés has contributed to and published several articles, including "Hospital Social Work Interventions," "La Intervencion del Trabajador Social en el Centro Hospitalario-Retos para la Profesión" "A Biographical Reflection of Being a Latin American Clinical Social Worker in the United States," "The New Anxiety-Emotional Problems Caused by The Covid-19," and "The Social Worker in the Emergency Room," which was his doctoral dissertation at Yeshiva University. For his professional excellence, he awarded as the "Best Social Worker" from the Department of Medicine at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center. Received an Award of "Excellence in Social Work" from la Organización Internacional de Trabajo Social (OITS) in Santiago, Chile in 2017.
