Leading a prestigious career in academia, Prof. Coquillette has served as a longtime faculty member at Boston College Law School. He served as the dean from 1985 to 1993. Presently, Prof. Coquillette is the J. Donald Monan S.J. University Professor. He has taught legal history and legal ethics for the past 25 years.
Aside from his commitments at Boston College, Prof. Coquillette has served as a visiting professor of law at his alma mater, Harvard University, and was recently appointed the Charles Warren Visiting Professor of American Legal History. He was a director of the Harvard Law School History Project, a reporter for the Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure, and is now a consultant on rules and procedures for the Judicial Conference of the U.S.
A former attorney, Prof. Coquillette spent a decade in practice before transitioning toward education. He spent two years as an associate at Palmer & Dodge in Boston, beginning in 1973, and was later promoted to a partner in 1980, through which he spent the next five years specializing in litigation. Prof. Coquillette also notably clerked for Justice Robert Braucher of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court between 1971 and 1972 and for Chief Justice Warren E. Berger of the Supreme Court of the United States between 1972 and 1973.
Widely published, Prof. Coquillette has contributed numerous scholarly articles to legal journals, and has co-authored several other publications in the field, including "On the Battlefield of Merit: Harvard Law School, The First Century" with Bruce Kimball in 2020 and "The Intellectual Sword: Harvard Law School, The Second Century" in 2020, also with Bruce Kimball. Furthermore, he has authored several others, including "Real Ethics for Real Lawyers" in 2016. Prof. Coquillette has served on the board of directors of the New England Quarterly since 1986.
Prof. Coquillette has been a participant in various civic initiatives, including being a trustee for the Ames Foundation and vice president of the Massachusetts Colonial Society.
Prof. Coquillette studied at Williams College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. Shortly thereafter, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in jurisprudence at the University of Oxford in 1969, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Harvard University in 1971. Prof. Coquillette has been admitted to practice law by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Prof. Coquillette has maintained prominent memberships in the American Bar Association, the American Society of Legal History, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Boston Bar Association and the American Law Institute. Prof. Coquillette is also a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Antiquarian Society, the Selden Society as a state correspondent and the Colonial Society of Massachusetts as a vice president and council member.
Prof. Coquillette's achievements have been recognized with a Sentinel of the Republic Prize in Political Science in 1965 and a Kaufman Prize in English in 1966 from Williams College. He was also a Hutchins Scholar from 1966 to 1967 and a Fulbright scholar between 1966 and 1968. Additionally, Prof. Coquillette received a Distinguished Service Medal from Boston College in 2007 and a Peter Dobkin Hall Prize from the Association for Research on Non-Profit Organizations and Voluntary Action in 2017.
