Celebrating over 50 years of experience as a materials science and engineering educator and researcher, Dr. Chaudhuri is renowned for her contributions to the field, notably including her research into the structure-property relationship in electronic materials, as well as wide band gap semiconductors and metal alloys. Born and raised in India, she initially obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics from Lady Brabourne College and a Master of Science in physics from the Science College of the University of Calcutta in 1967 and 1970 respectively. Upon immigrating to the United States, she earned a Master of Science in physics from the University at Albany in 1975. Dr. Chaudhuri completed her education in 1982, at which time she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanics, materials science and engineering from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
Following the conclusion of her academic efforts, Dr. Chaudhuri established herself within the mechanical engineering department at Wichita State University as an assistant professor in 1984. Committed to her role within the institution, she advanced to become an associate professor in 1990 and a full professor in 1997 before serving as the chair of the department from 2001 to 2004. From 2005 to 2015, she excelled as a professor and the chair of the department of mechanical engineering at Texas Tech University. In addition to leading undergraduate studies within the department, she is gratified to have garnered the graduate program a ranking of 81st in the nation from no previous ranking at all. Today, Dr. Chaudhuri continues her career as an adjunct and research professor at Portland State University.
Dr. Chaudhuri's current research consists of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and the synthesis of luminescent nanomaterials for light-emitting diodes and bioimaging applications. She has contributed her expertise as a visiting scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. and the Hefei University of Technology and HPSTAR, both in China. Previously, she served as a summer faculty research associate at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio in 1985. Because of her research breakthroughs, she was named as a Boeing Fellow from 1992 to 1995 and an ASME Fellow in 2013 and has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the Air Force, the Army Research Office, FAA and aircraft companies such as Boeing and Cessna. Dr. Chaudhuri has over 130 publications and has made over 80 presentations in national and international conferences.
Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Chaudhuri has maintained additional affiliations with the Material Research Society, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Society of Women Engineers, Pi Tau Sigma and Pi Mu Epsilon. For her contributions in the field, she is honored to have received such accolades as the Professor Incentive Award from Wichita State University, the Wichita State University Global Distance Learning Department Leadership Excellence Award, the Best Educator in Research Award, College of Engineering from Wichita State University and the Most Supportive Faculty Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers at Texas Tech University. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been selected for inclusion in Who's Who in the Midwest from 1996 to 1997, Who's Who in Science and Engineering from 1992 to 1993. Furthermore, Dr. Chaudhuri is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
