Well recognized as a leader in his field, Dr. Paez has served as the chief of the infectious diseases division of Baystate Medical Center since 2019. He is also the director of the infectious diseases fellowship program at Baystate Medical Center/University of Massachusetts Medical School-Baystate since 2012. He completed his infectious diseases fellowship training at the aforementioned medical center from 2004 to 2006 and internal medicine residency training from 2001-2004 at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. As an infectious disease specialist, he contributed significantly to the COVID-19 pandemic response in western Massachusetts. He is currently a member of the State Task Force for Vaccine Efficacy and Safety in Massachusetts and also a member of the board of directors of the Massachusetts Infectious Diseases Society. Dr. Paez's clinical and research interests are in the areas of diagnosis and treatment of HIV, influenza, and hepatitis.
Prior to embarking upon his medical career, Dr. Paez pursued an education at the Institute of Physical Therapy (now College of Rehabilitation Sciences) at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, earning a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy, Magna Cum Laude, in 1991. He later obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the same university, Magna Cum Laude, in 1999. Dr. Paez holds a subspecialty certification in infectious disease and internal medicine specialty from the American Board of Medical Specialties, as well as certification in wound care.
Dr. Paez is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American College of Physicians. He was named as an Outstanding Alumnus by the University of Santo Tomas. He also received the Maxwell Finland Award for Excellence in Research and Edward H. Kass Award for Clinical Excellence from the Massachusetts Infectious Diseases Society. Specializing in infectious diseases, Dr. Paez entered his profession out of deep and abiding compassion for others.
