To wit, he has found notable success as the supervisor of instruction within the Harlan Independent School District from 1983 to 2015. After completing coursework at the University of North Carolina in 1962, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in education, French and history from the University of Wisconsin in 1965. Upon graduation, he began his career as a French and history teacher at Harlan High School, holding the position for nearly 20 years until 1983. During this time, Dr. Greene earned a Master of Arts in education from Union College in 1973 and completed his education in 1982, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in education from the Ohio State University.
Dr. Greene has found additional success as the humanities scholar for the Southern Mountains Settlement Symposium and the Lynch Legacy Project. Dedicated to academia, he has excelled as an adjunct history instructor at Southeast Community College in Cumberland, Kentucky, from 1977 to 1983. Moreover, he has contributed his expertise to such organizations as the Southeastern Kentucky Special Education Cooperative, the Stokely Institute for Liberal Arts Education, the Pine Mountain Settlement School, the Kentucky Bicentennial Commission, the First Presbyterian Church of Harlan and the Kentucky State Historical Records Advisory Board. Additionally, Dr. Greene had served as a reviewer of The History Teacher from 1973 to 1983 and a contributor to "The Kentucky Encyclopedia and "Pine Mountain Beginnings."
Dr. Greene is gratified to have helped lead Harlan Independent School District in earning renown as one of the top school districts in the state of Kentucky. For his contributions in the field, Dr. Greene is honored to have been a recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Math and honored as the Harlan County Educator of the Year in 2015.
