Nursing
Dr. Taylor always has a passion for helping people heal. Although she originally aspired to be a psychologist, she became a nurse, first. She knew that nursing would support her family while she waited for her pathway to psychology to open. Dr. Taylor studied at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with honors, in 1976.
After graduating from college, Dr. Taylor spent years helping people heal their bodies and keep tiny premature infants alive. She worked as a registered nurse and charge nurse for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Oklahoma Children's Hospital. Shortly thereafter, she enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving to the rank of Captain between 1977 and 1980. She spent three years as a charge nurse, and intermittent acting head nurse, in the U.S. Army's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. She worked as a neonatal nurse at Santa Rosa Medical Center in San Antonio in 1980 before she moved to Alaska and worked as a labor and delivery nurse. Following several years as an administrator at Tucson Medical Center, Dr. Taylor worked as a registered nurse for Chandler Regional Hospital in Arizona in 1987-1991 and for Flagstaff Medical Center in 1991.
Psychologist, Counselor and Educator
Dr. Taylor subsequently transitioned into counseling as the owner of her own private practice, Northland Hypnotherapy, in Flagstaff, Arizona. Helping people heal through counseling was a dream job. Once Dr. Taylor began her own practice, it proved to be the happiest years of her career journey. She earned a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling. She graduated summa cum laude at Northern Arizona University in 1993.
As an extension of her counseling career, Dr. Taylor conducted numerous workshops, lectured before various groups, was an international educational consultant, served as a crisis counselor and worked closely with juveniles. Additionally, she had the pleasure of serving as a guest lecturer at Northern Arizona Institute of Technology in Flagstaff and made appearances as a special guest on KVNA Radio during the 1990s. She helped homeless people, juveniles and troubled families find increased happiness.
Dr. Taylor earned a Doctor of Education in Psychology from Northern Arizona University in 2001. She spent years in the public school system as a school psychologist and in private practice as a licensed psychologist between 1996 and 2012. Dr. Taylor was also a professor at Capella University for seven years, beginning in 2011. During that time, she taught graduate level courses in psychology and counseling.
Because of Dr. Taylor's passion for healing and education, she enjoyed field-work supervision of graduate psychology students in practicum and internships from 1996 to 2012. Students and prior supervisees continue to seek guidance and mentorship from Dr. Taylor today. She is encouraged by the competence and compassion she sees in future professionals. Dr. Taylor is a licensed psychologist and a certified school psychologist in the state of Arizona.
An avid volunteer in her community, Dr. Taylor spent several years as a counselor and educator at the Tucson Medical Center during the early 1980s and the Gilbert Presbyterian Church in Gilbert, Arizona, during the mid to late 1990s. She also lent her time to Paz De Cristo in Mesa during the late 1990s and the Hospice of the Valley during 2012 -2013. Currently, Dr. Taylor volunteers her time with the Arizona Museum of Natural History since 2018.
Supporting her career in mental health, Dr. Taylor has been a member of the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association. She also received three Stephen Shank Teaching Awards between 2012 and 2017. She was selected for seven Firebird Book Awards for four of her published books. Furthermore, Dr. Taylor was honored with an Excellence Award from Courage to Change Enrichment Leadership & Mentoring LLC as a keynote speaker in 2017. She was awarded the Albert Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
Author
Dr. Taylor obtained a Master of Arts in Creative Writing at Wilkes University in 2015. Today, she focuses on her writing and has notably published several books including "Making Miracles: First I Cured My In-Curable Blindness, So Why the Hell Am I Still Fat?" which won three book awards, and "Slip Away: 11 Escape Stories," which won an award. "My Dead Mama's Wind Chimes" won two awards. She also published "Chocolate Kisses" with her husband, Neal C. Taylor, a romantic comedy that won an award for its humor. Dr. Taylor spends time traveling the world and experiencing other cultures while writing. She expresses a theme of healing in her writing. She always has several new books in the works.
Personal
Dr. Taylor enjoys spending time with her family, which includes great-grandchildren. Multiple generations crowd around the kitchen table to play games, tease and laugh. Family pets are usually in the middle of the commotion.
