Dr. Willis is an organic and analytical chemist and entrepreneur whose expertise includes decades of consulting in research and development, as well as technical writing services and the development of various medical devices. Currently the president and chief executive officer of TeKnow Source, Inc., a consulting company in Rensselaer, New York, and Shirley, Massachusetts, since 1997, Dr. Willis focuses on projects related to early-stage development and prototyping. He also lends his expertise to several other companies as an expert in the medical device industry.
Between 2004 and 2018, Dr. Willis simultaneously ran a second business, Ultradian Diagnostics LLC, in Rensselaer, a clinical-stage medical device company. He was involved in the development of biosensors for monitoring chronic disease. Some of Dr. Willis' other noteworthy roles throughout his illustrious career included an appointment with MediSense, Inc., in Bedford, Massachusetts, between 1993 and 1997 as director of corporate research, where he oversaw a staff of 10 doctoral scientists. He also worked for Radiometer Medical, a Danish-based manufacturer, between 1987 and 1993, where he served as vice president and general manager and was responsible for establishing its U.S. headquarters in Cleveland. Additionally, Dr. Willis held several other entrepreneurial roles and had the opportunity to teach as a research professor in the department of chemistry and chemical biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, from 2004 to 2005.
A renowned expert in medical devices and equipment, Dr. Willis notably developed several products that can easily and accurately measure analytes in body fluids. He was also involved in leading a talented team in the development of devices that can assist patients with diabetes, particularly regarding in vivo, continuous glucose monitoring. Some of Dr. Willis' more recent contributions also include non-invasive, wearable sensors for physiological monitoring. Dr. Willis currently holds 23 U.S. patents in biosensors.
Immersing himself as a scientific writer, Dr. Willis has contributed numerous articles in scientific publications as a result of his years of research, including in the Journal of Electrochemical Society, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs Journal, and the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. He is also a successful technical writer, grant writer and editor who currently provides his services to various organizations that require his expertise.
Becoming active civically nearly 40 years ago, Dr. Willis joined the advisory board for the clinical laboratory practice of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in 1986. That same year, he also became a member of the 128 Entrepreneurs' Center in Waltham, Massachusetts. In 1988, he joined the technology advisory council of the Edison Biotechnology Center in Cleveland. Today, he remains a charter member of the dean's advisory board at Iona College since 2015.
Dr. Willis earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at Iona College in 1969, followed by a Master of Science in analytic chemistry at the State University of New York at Oswego in 1974 and a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry at the University of Connecticut in 1977. He also completed postdoctoral coursework at the University of Minnesota between 1979 and 1980. Dr. Willis has been certified in advanced management through the Stanford Graduate School of Business since 1992.
Dr. Willis is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and the New York Biotechnology Association. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society, the Electrochemical Society, the American Association of Clinical Chemistry, the New York Academy of Sciences and, among others, the National Institutes of Health.
Securing numerous grants for his work, including over $1 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health during his years as the owner of Ultradian, Dr. Willis used the support to complete three clinical studies at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He also received a fellowship from the University of Connecticut Research Foundation in 1976. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Willis has been featured in approximately 35 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
